Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - Jarkko Nieminen (6:3 6:1 6:1)

Nieminen: Stockholm will be the last tournament of my carrier

  • Published:

He played only two Budesliga matches this month after doing two Davis Cup matches and a challenger in Finland after Wimbledon. Ranking is no longer important since this is his final season. His first round opponent Tsonga was not too focused in Winston Salem despite claiming to be motivated. He is 5-2 in head-to-head matches against Nieminen

Age is often being brought up when talking about tennis players but they do not play the key role on one's decision to retire. Motivation and results, however, do. Karlovic, who is 36, would definitely not be saying that he loves tennis and that he would play a for a few more years if he wasn't Top 30. Nieminen is no longer a Top 100 player. He realized that he can no longer keep up with the top players and is not interested in mediocrity.

He played only for Finland and for money after Wimbledon. The Finish Davis Cup team lost to Portugal, while Nieminen played the challenger in Tamepere just because it's a Finnish tournament. He was always an ambassador of tennis in his county. This season, he managed to reach the semis but the struggle against Veic and Zopp and the defeat to Lamasine clearly show that it's time to stop. Nieminen is fully aware of that as well.

- I played badly in Tampere and I haven't felt too well physically but I won three matches. It's hard to play in slow conditions when you're not at your best. That is why I had so many close matches. As for the schedule, I don't know if I'll play after the US Open but Stockholm will be my last tournament ever - Nieminen wrote in one of his blog posts and then turned to his last ever Grand Slam:

- I am to play Tsonga. We met many times so far. I beat him twice, he beat me five times. He is a very tough draw especially at such a big tournament but I'm looking forward to it. I don't feel like I'm playing my last ever Grand Slam now. I'm relaxed and enjoying it.

While Nieminen played Bundesliga, his French opponent did only the greatest tournaments. He didn't want to play the preparation tournaments before Wimbledon or those before US Open other than the two Series 1000 tournaments. That could have backfired since he had 1000 points to defend in Montreal but he reached the quarterfinal to prevent any major drop in ranking. In Cincinnati, he didn't make it further than the first round, which is why he decided to play Winston Salem, his very first Series 250 tournament of the season.

- I didn't play much this season and I want to win as many points as possible. That is why I have to play more. I played only nine tournaments from the start, which is why every week from now on matters. I feel well. I don't know why but Cincinnati has always caused me trouble. I often lose the first matches there. But, it's a new week now and I'm hoping for a successful tournament - the Frenchman said last week.

Depite being very ambitious, which made him one of the top contenders for the title, he failed to record back to back wins in Winston Salem as Johnson beat him in third set tiebreak. Johnson later missed out on a great chance to play his first ATP final. Tsonga didn't seem too focused on the court as he said he would but he didn't lament the defeat much, saying only that he had a bad day. Motivation won't be a problem here for either opponent. However, Nieminen didn't play a serious ATP match since Wimbledon. The win over Bedene in Bundesliga is of little significance, especially since he lost to Gonzalez. Those two were the only matches he had this month.
