Gael Monfils - Gilles Simon (6:3 3:6 6:7 6:2 2:6)

Simon knows how to 'numb' Monfils

  • Published:

Simon's greatest advantage is the ability to force the opponent into the kind of rhythm that suits him. That leaves even the aggressive Monfils with rallies of over 30 strokes and that is why these two players had a 3-hour head-to-head meeting indoors this season. Monfils won only one out of the 6 head-to-head matches

Simon lost only two games in the first two sets and Kavcic got injured before and it was questionable whether he would even play. Of course, it's easy to conclude that his injury played the main part but it didn't. The Slovenian claimed that he's not ready, that he doesn't like Wimbledon and that the grass court doesn't suit him before coming here and then won the first match in straight sets. He didn't even stand a chance this time even though 'the injury' didn't stop him from winning the third set.

Simon had 14 break point opportunities in their head-to-head match and converted 10. His serves were not brilliant either but three lost service games didn't make any difference in the end. The Slovenian did managed to win the third set and once again got limited to only one game. Simon, simply put, basically won all the key points and finished with almost 40 points more than the Slovenian who once again complained about an injury. He talked about a hip injury after the first round and then about the right foot in the next one.

- I played very well and I'm happy with it. I made progress compared to the first round - Simon said but he knows that he will have to get the level of his game up even more:

- Playing Monfils is tough because he forces you into a lot of work. Our last match went on for over three hours. He says that he doesn't like the grass court but he has the game for these conditions. He's got great footwork, great serve and toughness on both sides. But I have my strong suit as well.

There was an interesting scene in the Mannarino-Monfils match. The stands were laughing, the umpire was laughing, the players were shouting something to each other, whihc got the stands laughing again. Mannarino was in great spirits, as if the match was an exhibition, even though he was down 2-0 in sets and served at 5-5 in the third one. That has always been his problem. He said is a few times before the match that he thinks Monfils is a much better player than him. There's always someone who is better. Even if they weren't, lack of confidence will always see you lose. Manarino had no faith in himself, which is why Monfils won in straight sets.

It started off close as expected. Neither player lost any service points until the tie-break and then each won opponents service points as the tie-break started. They were totally equal until 5-5, which is when Monfils won two consecutive points. That was enough for him to win the first set. It didn't take him long to win the second one thanks to one converted break point. Mannarino definitely lost faith after that, allowing the better ranked countryman to sailed through the rest of the match that could have potentially been very dangerous for him.

Monfils got what he wanted most at RG - to win the first few matches without spending too much energy. It took him 10 sets to reach the second round in Paris, while he did the same here after only 6. He will definitely need that freshness against Simon, who is capable of sucking everyone into his game. He was often able to 'numb' Monfils as well. Simon won 5 out of their last 6 matches even though they played in fast indoors conditions. That is the aforementioned 'smothering' because Simon does everything, step by step, according to the plan.
