Garbine Muguruza - Angelique Kerber (4:6 6:2 6:2)

Muguruza: I don't think Kerber is happy to be playing against me

  • Published:

The German came to Paris with a 'questionable' back, and she earned two easy wins with only six lost games. Muguruza lost all three matches against her, but she points out that she was getting closer to winning each next time

Muguruza played well in the first round against Petra Martic. She did have some problems on her return in the second set, which is not as surprising because the Croat served well. The more important thing is that the Spanish woman played well after her serve and finished the match without giving away a break point chance. However, she hasn't put together wins since Dubai in February, and that was a long time ago. So the match against Giorgi was important for her confidence.

The Italian is an aggressive player, and she pointed out several times that she will not give up on her playing style even if it leads her into defeat. That's what happened in the match against Garbina.

It's enough to say that Giorgi made 35 unforced errors, while the Spanish woman made only 16. Camila managed to make Muguruza seem like a 'patient' player. The truth was that Giorgi played her tennis in which he didn't allow for a rally to develop. However, this kind of tennis proved to be fatal for her. Muguruza waited for the mistakes, she was patient and that's all she had to do.

The Spanish woman put together wins for the first time since February, and she is facing Kerber in the third round. The German who she couldn't defeat in three of their previous head-to-head matches, including one this season.

- Each time I am closer to a win. She is having a good clay season, but I don't think she's happy to be playing against me. I will be ready for a challenge - said Muguruza.

Kerber came to Paris under some question marks. She was unable to play Nurnberg semifinal because of an injury, and she left there in tears. However, the first round of Roland Garros brought about an easy win over Babos with only one lost game. The German claimed she is still not at 100%, but it's getting better and that's all that matters. Wins also matter, and she already earned two of them and shown in the best way that things are getting better.

After Babos, she defeated Tomljanovic as well. The Australian won only five games and that win is another proof that the German is having less problems with the injury.

- I am close to getting back to 100%. The conditions were different today than in the first round. That made things a bit more difficult - said Angie, and added:

- I worked hard over the last couple of months. Clay was never my favorite surface, but I think I'm playing really good right now. I have a lot of confidence from last week and I am happy with my performances here.

How could she not be happy. In the two matches in Paris she lost only six games combines, and her appearance was under question because of the back injury. That injury gets more meaningless by the hour, and two convincing wins suggest that the German is in good condition.

- I am looking forward to next matches. Starting to work with Torben Beltz was a good decision. I feel good on the court and it all turned out the way it should - said Angie.

Like we said, the German has 3-0 against Muguzura. She easily won the first two matches in 2013 and 2014 in two sets. However, this year's match was played in three sets and that's why Muguruza says that she is getting closer to defeating her. The Spanish woman won the first set in Sydney 6-0, and then lost the match. They never played outside hardcourt.
