Tenis » Stuttgart (W), Clay, 2nd Round
23.04.2015. 16:00 Finished
Lucie Safarova - Caroline Wozniacki (6:7 1:6)

Wozniacki hired Vicario for the clay court season

  • Published:

Wozniacki's got 3/8 record on clay in the last two years, and she'll try to change that with Vicario's help. But, the courts in Stuttgart suit the more aggressive players, and Safarova is one of those. She adjusted with two matches she played, and Wozniacki doesn't have the arsenal Bondarenko had in the first match against Safarova

Safarova pointed out last year that the balls and the courts in Stuttgart are really fast. It suits her, her serve and her hits that can dictate the rhythm from the baseline. Last year, she kept it up for three hours against Sharapova, who won this tournament three times. She didn't have a lucky lot then, nor two consecutive years prior to that, when she played Sharapova and Na Li.

Bondarenko wasn't a bad lot on paper, but she played the qualifiers and that helped her adjust better. Safarova came from Ostrava, a fast indoors tournament this weekend. She had problems adjusting in the first set, but did much better in the second. You wouldn't tell it from the final result. Bondarenko played really aggressively, matched Safarova in that, but Safarova showed better tennis when she had to. Her serve worked well, she allowed the only break chance in the middle of the first set, and she got nine of those on the return, but only used two.

Safarova will start against Wozniacki here, a player who played this tournament's quarterfinal four years ago, but got eliminated in the second round three times, and one time in the first round. When it comes to clay, Wozniacki's got 3/8 ratio in the last two seasons. Wozniacki will try to solve her bad clay performances with the help of a big name - Arantxa Sanchez Vicario.

- The clay season wasn't my best in the last few years. I spent a few weeks with Vicario when I was in Miami, I consulted with her and she gave me a few tactic advice. It was great and everything turned out okay. You have to hit more balls on clay, change the rhythm, and that's it. My game should suit the clay courts, but I didn't have the results I wanted - Wozniacki said.

But, any changes Wozniacki might have made will hardly show in Stuttgart. The courts are really fast here, they suit aggressive tennis, and the first days of the tournament showed that the aggressive players are in charge here. Safarova is definitely one of them, she adjusted by playing two matches (one singles and one doubles), while Wozniacki doesn't have the arsenal Bondarenko had against Safarova. This is also Wozniacki's first clay match this season, and she'll definitely have a hard time today.
