Elias Ymer - David Ferrer (3:6 4:6)

Ferrer: I practiced with Ymer a lot

  • Published:

The young Swede tied ATP wins for the first time in Barcelona. He won a thriller again, and Kyrgios missed 4-1 in the third set after having a toilet break. Ferrer worked hard against Montanes but got another convincing win. His compatriot had a double-break ball in the second set

Ferrer was the second man of this tournament for years. You would just have to see that he'd have to face Nadal, and he would get to that match, and then lose it. He really wanted to win this tournament, but regularly lost the finals. He avoided his compatriot once, but then lost to another. Verdasco used the situation. Ferrer's been playing great this season. He won three titles, and will hunt a new one here, even though Nadal and Nishikori are already subscribed for the final. Ferrer beat Montanes convincingly, which is a tradition by now, but this time, it was rougher than the result would suggest.

Montanes had a break-ball in the first game already. He had a game ball on his next serve, too, but was losing 2-0 after about 10 minutes of the match. Ferrer won that set convincingly. Montanes woke up in the second. He lead 3-1, got a double-break ball. Ferrer saved it and didn't allow him a game for the rest of the match. Three out of the last five games went to deuce, but Ferrer won every one. This win was more of a mental one, perhaps. Besides, Montanes got only five games with 50 points won.

- I knew I had to be careful here because I would lose early on in the last two years. I'm happy with my game, and the results, first of all. Montanes was really good from the baseline this time - Ferrer was his usual humble self, but now he'll face a rising young star:

- I've never played an official match against Ymer, but I practiced with him a lot. He's got a lot of rhythm, and he's got a bright future ahead of him. Personally, I like his game a lot.

Ymer moved to Barcelona after Miami, and got an invite here. He justified it with the first round already, and now he beat Kyrgios. The Australian's defeat isn't that surprising because he had a long break, and only played one tournament after the Grand Slam at home. What is surprising is that he lost a match he should have won in straight sets, then in three, and lost it in the end. He doesn't usually lose matches like that. That's why a congratulation is in order for Ymer, he won two matches in a photo-finish against more experienced players.

Even though he got a break-ball first, Ymer quickly caught up. He lost the serve on null, and Kyrgios confirmed the first set with another break. The Australian saved three tied break-balls at the beginning of the second set, and then kept on creating pressure. He missed break-balls in a few games, including the 6-4 match-ball in the second set. The Swede solved it all, turned the set around, and then the third set when Kyrgios was leading 4-1. In the end he saved another match-ball in the tie-break.

- Kyrgios started this young players' rise. Many, myself included, were motivated with the Wimbledon success. He showed us it can be done. We actually know each other well from the juniors, and we often practiced together. I'm thrilled about this win, and it's the first time I connected wins on this level - Ymer was more than happy, but then revealed the reason for the turnaround:

- I was losing 4-1 in the third set and then Nick asked for a toilet break. He lost rhythm after that, and I used it.

Even though the Swede left us impressed with his mental strength, he'll now take a role of a complete underdog. He turned the matches against two hitters, but he might face an impossible mission against Ferrer. The lack of freshness could definitely be a problem, but mostly the strength of hits that he'd like to use to break Ferrer's shield. He'll have to wait a bit more for a win like that.
