Tomas Berdych - Gael Monfils (6:1 6:4)

Monfils: Berdych's game doesn't suit me but...

  • Published:

The Frenchman lost 5 out of 6 matches against the Czech, two of which this season. Still, he points out that his tennis is at a high level and that he hopes that can lead him into surprising Berdych today

Right from the start of the tournament, Gael Monfils has been happy with his form. He was getting better each next match, displaying fierceness in the first round against Kuznetsov to advance and beat Dolgopolov after two tie-breaks. He beat Federer next and then crushed Dimitrov last round.

It was very obvious that the matchup did not suit Dimitrov from the very start. Especially when Monfils was that good. The Frenchman was, as always, everywhere. He also served well to get a lot of free points but also did a great job against Dimitrov's serves. His shots were deep and mistakes few and far between. Dimitrov had nothing to stop his with, while being the inferior and less creative player in rallies.

- I tried to force him into running from one side to the other. I tried to dictated my points through forehand and force him into running. Also, I tried to fire my shots deep in the court to force him into staying behind the baseline - Gael said.

He did as planned and it worked. He knew Dimitrov liked dictating points and he stripped him off of it. The deep shots did a huge part of the job, disabling Dimitrov from attacking. When he tried to attack, he would only make mistakes because of the lack of rhythm.

The only chance Dimitrov had was at 4-1 when he had 00-30 against Monfils' serve. But, Monfils' serve worked perfectly to get him out of the tricky situation, just like in the third game of the second set when he had saved both break-points he had in the match. It was truly a great performance by the Frenchman, who can be very happy.

- I'm very happy and surprised since I never play good at this point in the season. I'm happy because I did as I wanted to. I'm strong and have a lot of options - Monfils said.

While he had tactics and good matchup against Dimitrov, Berdych was never a suitable opponent for Monfil, which is kind of weird since he had good record with players like Berdych. The Czech would often muscle his way through the head-to-head matches and had 5-1 record against Monfils. Also, Berdych already beat them twice this season, but Monfils retired from the second one with an injury after being completely inferior up until then. There are two things we need to point out, though. The first one is, Monfils' game is really good-quality and secondly, the Frenchman won the only match on clay court (Roland Garros in 2013).

- I need to find the right tactics to neutralize his game that is causing me a lot of trouble. I never managed to control him. I hope I'll do well tomorrow. I haven't felt this good in a while. I feel good mentally as well - Monfils said. He might be even more aggressive today to strip the Czech off his aggression. Letting someone as aggressive as Berdych to take initiative would be a suicide.

- I hope I'll be ready physically because I already feel tired. I'll be fine - Monfils said.

As for Berdych, he reached Monte Carlo semifinals to tie his highest achievement here. But it was not easy. He met two very different players in the first two rounds to goon and meet the hard-working Bautista-Agut. But Berdych won to keep a clean sheet against players outside of Top 10 this season. One of them was set to face him in QFs.

Before that match, we said that Raonic's leg will play the key role in it. He seemed to be struggling against Robredo and then the same happened against Berdych. But the Czech is no Robredo. He opened fiercely to cause Raonic trouble since Canadian's serve wasn't as good as normally. Tomas forced Milos into running and didn't just go on firing shots without any plan. The good tactics got him a 5-2 lead in the first set, which is when Raonic decided to retire. He was headed for a defeat and risking a major injury simply wasn't worth it.

- Things are going well for now. My preparation for this tournament was good. I did as much as I could to adjust to clay after Miami - Berdych said and added:

- I reached semifinals and that's a good thing. It's not the best way to win but I hope he'll be alright.

Berdych couldn't record a normal win over a Top 10 opponent once again. But he is still beating those outside top 10 and Monfils is one of those players. Also, we talked about head-to-head record already but Monfils should not be underrated. He's playing well and aiming for Top 10.

As for Berdych, he doesn't have major titles. Winning consistently is nice but being on a 1-5 record against the top 10 is not good either. That is not how you win the big titles and he knows it.

- I play well but that doesn't mean anything. I'm still not happy with my results. I hope I can take it one step further here - Tomas said.
