Novak Đoković - Rafael Nadal (6:3 6:3)

Even though Nadal's making progress, he'll need a lot more for Novak

  • Published:

Nadal had a set and 5-3, and then lost four games in a row against his compatriot. Even though he passed the mental-physical test, just like against Isner, he'll have a hard time against Đoković. Đoković continued winning convincingly, and there are lots of reasons to believe Nadal won't stop him this time, either

Raonic forfeited by the end of the first set, Čilić started playing well when it was too late, and Dimitrov couldn't even make an impression. The first three quarterfinals didn't justify the scene and the expectations. Ferrer and Nadal weren't completely thrilling with their quality, but the drama of the match saved the day. First of all thanks to Nadal who managed to gamble away another big lead in the second set, showing vulnerability once again. Even though he got to the quarterfinal, and showed progress when it comes to aggressiveness, that kind of game won't be enough against Đoković. The dethroned ruler of the Monaco tennis courts will have to show something new if he wants to get his throne back.

Ferrer showed Nadal's state in the quarterfinal. We saw that his game was not the problem, not as much as his self-confidence. Rafael started the match with a double break. Ferrer started to catch up too late. When Nadal lead with a double break in the second set, everything seemed done. But, Nadal managed to get to the third set despite 5-3 and a match-break. His self-confidence ran out, and only his hard work got him the win. He started the third set with 2-0, too. Ferrer almost got back because he had the ball for 3-3, but his compatriot finally broke him there. Who knows what would have happened if the third set had an intense final.

- I haven't played on a level this high for a long time. Three hours against one of the best. I'm especially happy about the third set and my reaction after losing the second set. I did a great job mentally and physically in those moments - Nadal was content, even though he started all three sets great, and then complicated things. But he's focused on the positive for now:

- Mentally, this was my best tournament after a long time. There was no nervousness like in the last tournaments. Most importantly, I played the way I wanted to play in key moments, and that's what makes me happy.

Đoković didn't have a real test. The match against Čilić started at 1:15 pm, but Čilić was at least half an hour late. Figuratively, because he only won his first game after losing eight in a row. Out of three aces, his total in the entire match, he scored two in that game. He got it and smiled while raising his hands up in the air. The audience joined the match then because up until then, it seemed as if Marin was playing a comeback match, not a match right after beating Tsonga, a performance he said was one of the best in his career on clay.

The second set got more interesting. Marin even had a break-ball for 4-4, but Novak quickly won three points in a row. We saw the longest game at the end. Čilić missed three game-balls on his serve, and lost the third match-ball. Even though he looked disappointed, he probably thought he had a chance to come back, but he was wrong. He looked untouchable with his serves against Tsonga. Only a day later, and Đoković broke everything. That might be the biggest problem for Nadal. What was enough to beat Ferrer, won't be nearly enough against Đoković. But Nadal can do much better. Čilić now has 0-12 against Novak, and the impression remains that he can't get his chance to change that score on this type of court.

- A good match for me, I was happy about it. I think the week couldn't have started better, and I hope to continue in this rhythm. If I can do that, I believe I'll get to the final - Novak was confident after a few quick wins, but now he'll face an old rival:

- I have to get ready mentally. I'm ready physically, and with my game. I spent a little time on the court, which is always good before the tournament final. I feel the ball the way I want to feel it, and I'm ready for a new challenge. I know what's waiting for me, I know I'll have to keep the intensity high throughout the whole match.

When Đoković beat Nadal in 2013 here, he ended the series of 46 wins the Spaniard had in Monte Carlo. That ended an era, and Ferrer confirmed it last year by beating Nadal in the quarterfinal. Nobody played more matches on the tour than Rafa and Novak did. As for the clay tournaments, Nadal is leading 14-4, but six of those wins are from Roland Garros, where it's played in best-of-five. That was his key advantage in the last matches in Paris. Before that, Novak won four matches in a row, all in best-of-three.

Even though Nadal will point out positive things about this win, we have to show some negative ones. First of all, Ferrer played a pretty weak match with lots of mistakes, more than usual against Nadal, especially at the beginning of the match. He had 45 unforced errors in the end, but also seven winners more than Nadal. Rafael scored only five backhand winners in the entire match, so the question that comes up is what that will look like against Đoković.

He also only had 60% first serve points, and we have to wonder what problems he'll have against the best return player of the tour. Those three hours against Ferrer might be a won battle, but he'll hardly win the war. We can't say he showed us a game that could beat Novak. Nadal's still got an aura of being untouchable at the Roland Garros, Soderling was forced to retire. Nadal doesn't have that mental advantage here.

Updates

  • 18.04.2015. 09:53h Novak starting up a bakery
Federer won 19 sets without losing a point in 2006. It's a record, but nobody got the number of ten sets like those in a season faster than Đoković. To make it even more impressive, the list of names who didn't have a single game in a set includes four Top 10 players. Murray had the honor twice this season. Since a popular name for winning without losing a set is bagel, we could say Novak is handing out bagels as if he had a bakery.
