Paolo Lorenzi - Martin Klizan (3:6 4:6)

Klizan has an excuse for everything

  • Published:

The Italian hasn't been playing since the clay-surfaced tournaments in South America. Last week Klizan lost to Rosol for whom this was a first win after Melbourne. Although the Slovak can beat anyone when he's in the mood, he rarely plays two excellent sets in a row

Although Klizan is an attractive player who can score a winner from every corner of the court, he finds a lot more things don't suit him. In a recent interview he blamed the racket company who last year gave him around 30 rackets that they were too heavy because of the huge amounts of paint on them. That, of course, affected his results. He won both Davis Cup matches three weeks ago, and he almost didn't play. He's not satisfied with selector Mecir. He played only due to Hrbaty making him. We're not overreacting. Klizan has a lot of things which get on his nerves and he rarely admits defeat. The interviews he gave regarding his unsuccessful South American tournament were interesting:

- We were playing at an high altitude. Estrella often trains in such conditions and that's why he had the advantage. In Sao Paolo the fans were terrible. They shouted and clapped more to my unforced errors than to the home player's winners - Klizan had all the excuses ready for his weak performances in Quito and Sao Paolo, as well as for the three games won in Rio:

- I didn't have the strength. The humidity was huge, and 20 minutes were spent on the first couple of games. I had a headache in such conditions. The same thing happened in Australia. I have to deal with that problem.

Apparently the heat problem is not a passing thing. We don't know if that's the reason he was defeated by Rosol on Indian Wells, but it could explain new oscillations. After the won first set in which we've seen a single break, he lost seven games in a row. He took the lead with the break in the third set, and then lost the next four games, as well as the match. He used only two out of 11 break-points. It was Rosol's first win on Australian Open. We have to say that the Czech played three good matches on the tournament, but Klizan's game isn't unusual. Who lives by the sword, dies by the sword.

Lorenzi is a completely different story. While Slovak is letting his talent fly by, the Italian took out the maximum out of his career. His record on Grand Slams is 2-15, and he's 33 years old. Despite that, he's still among Top 100. He's one of those who loses to better players, but also wins weaker ones. He knows how to use what's offered. This year on Australian Open he scored his second Grand Slam win. He beat Dolgopolov who shouldn't have played because of a knee injury. After that he stuck to clay in South America.

- I don't like to play in Europe because I have a lot of problems because of allergies. It's good when it's cloudy and rainy. It's easier then, but when it's sunny, we have a problem. That's why I prefer South America. Just as an example: last year it was constantly raining on Roland Garros and I immediately qualified for the main draw- commented Lorenzi his allergies which he depends on.

The Italian can't be satisfied with the South American tour. He only has one ATP quarter-finals, but in the last three tournaments he won only once. In this tournament his record is 1-3; one win against Ljubicic. He played only one head-to-head against the Slovak and lost that match in 54 minutes. He didn't even get a chance on the return in Umag's slow conditions. In such conditions he's an outsider, but Klizan is far from the player who can be trusted.
