Madison Brengle - Caroline Wozniacki (0:6 1:6)

A tough challenge for the 4th seed

Even though Wozniacki is regarded as a heavy favorite here, Brengle will most likely not go down without putting up a good fight. She's been doing really well this year, playing good-quality tennis and is expected to be more aggressive than usual against Wozniacki as well

After a defeat to the defending champion in Indian Wells second round, Brengle came to Miami to try and make it further in the tournament. Unlike Caroline, who was given the first round bye, Brengle played Krunic and recorded a very convincing win. The young Serbian opponents has been out of shape for quite a while now, playing a really bad game. The match against Brengle was no different. The American needed only 55 minutes to bring down the Serbian. 

Krunic simply couldn't break through Brengle's consistent defense and once again served poorly. Only 34% of service points won was not enough even for a dignified defeat. Brengle was doing great, moving great, and defended brilliantly. Besides, she knew exactly when to move from defending to attacking, which only resulted in more frustration for Krunic. It was a really good performance for the home player.

Brengle will have to do even better now if she wants to make it to round three. She is set to meet No. 4 Caroline Wozniacki, with whom the Miami conditions agree and who is defending last season's quarterfinals. She fell short of expectations when Bencic knocked her out in Indian Wells third round. The Dane was not that powerless for a long time, which forced her to change tactics in the second set and try and get winner through a more aggressive game. That, in turn, resulted in errors and Wozniacki finished with 38 unforced errors in 2 sets. The plan was to force Bencic into running but the Swiss was hitting the ball deep in the court throughout the match, thus disabling Wozniacki to develop her game.

Brengle will beyond any doubt try and surprise Woznicki in the same manner Bencic did last week. That means she will not rush into anything but try and keep Wozniacki behind the baseline with deep shots. It is unrealistic to expect Wozniacki to play another match with that many unforced errors. More likely, the more consistent Wozniacki will find a solution for Brengle and win a close match.
