Venus Williams - Urszula Radwanska (6:3 6:2)

End of the road for Radwanska?

  • Published:

Although Radwanska did beat Venus in their last duel, one gets the impression she has not chance this time around. The 'reborn' American is playing incredible tennis this season. She is also playing in front of her fans, so we can expect her best performance

Both the public and many 'experts' though  it was over for Venus Williams. A few years ago there were reports of it being time to end her career, and that there's no point in playing if the injuries hobble you that much. However, she loves to play and did not give up, returning to the court in 2015 in grand style. She won a title in her very first tournament, and got to the quarterfinal in the Australian Open, a very good result. She played well in her last tournament at Doha last month, but lacked consistency against Azarenka.

That consistent performance was Venus' biggest issue over the past years. Due to her back she cannot move as quickly as before, but she makes up for that with high quality shots, which will be one of her strengths in Miami as well, as very few players can return her powerful projectiles well. This is why her good results in this tournament are no surprise. She may have never won it, but she also never dropped out sooner than third round.

Urszula got to Venus through the first round, and got there vie the qualifications. Although she opened her first round match against Coco better and held the initiative in the first part of the match, it was her consistent performance that won her the match once again. In a long and tiresome match, it took Urszula 2 hours and 43 minutes to beat the home player, getting revenge for the defeat at Stanford's quick surface and continuing with the great results she's been having lately. It turned out Coco's serve was not as untouchable under these conditions, Urszula backed off and waited behind the baseline, and returned the ball into the body, preventing early attacks. She took her serve seven times, confirming once again that she can parry players with stronger serves and shots, just like her sister.

Although Urszula played well  and gave consistent performances in all three of her matches, she has no chance against Venus. The American has much stronger and better shots than Konjuh or Coco, and will have a much easier time closing our rallies. Truth be told, Venus has just a 7-6 score against Agnieszka, who plays the same tennis her sister Urszula does, but Urszula has yet to reach that level, so the only question is how long will her first serve hold and how hard will she lose.
