Hantuchova tied wins for the first time after 15 tournaments

Hantuchova has two titles in Pattaya but her carrier has been going downhill since than. This place has clearly evoked some nice memories but we need to point out that Hantuchova beat Zhan, who was injured, yesterday. She will have another good chance today, this time to advance through to the semis

Duan managed to make step forward in her carrier by making it into Top 200. She played ITF level exclusively two years ago and tried to make the transition to WTA level last season. She would finish minor WTA tournaments with some success but major tournaments weren't successful at all. She was knocked out of Pattaya in qualifying matches the last two years and got in the main draw directly this season. She made it into QFs without basically doing anything.

She managed to beat the qualifier Chan in straight sets in what turned out to be a very bad match. Chan served for the first set, had 3-1 in the second one, a break point in the sixth game and three set points in two separate games. She used none of that and Duan took advantage of it to beat he on account of experience. She was the favorite in the next match and won it convincingly. She was very convincing in the first set but not only because of her good game - the opponent was injured and had to ask for medical assistance after the first set and retired only a few minutes later.

Duan is now to face Hantuchova, a player with nice memories of Pattaya. She has two titles, from three and four years ago. But, those were the times when Hantuchova's name meant something in tennis. She has in the meantime lost her Top 50 status.

Interestingly, Hantuchova's first two matches here were against players she already met this season. She lost in straight sets to Diyas and started badly here. Aggressiveness payed off later on as she emerged victorious. Hantuchova won the first head-to-head match of the season against Zhang but that opponent had the fever here for days and could not practice properly ahead of their match. She played with a heavy bandaged left thigh and was clearly struggling to move. The medical team gave her a thigh massage and a back massage in the match.

- We met in Australia and I knew this would be a tough match. The first set was close but I didn't give up on my shots and I played tough, much better than in the first round - Hantuchova said and added:

- I could see that she was struggling with some problems but I knew that staying focused and not thinking about it was the key.

This will be Hantuchova first quarterfinals since April of last year. This is actually the first time since Roland Garros last season (third round) that she managed to tie two wins despite participating in 16 (!) tournaments since. Pattaya clearly evoked some nice memories and Hantuchova will be given a good chance to make some new ones today.
