Luca Vanni - Joao Souza (6:4 6:7 6:4)

Souza: I'm not the favorite

  • Published:

Unexpected semifinal between a qualifier and a player who got in on a wildcard, both went as underdogs into every match they played here in Sao Paolo. This is Vanni's first ATP semifinal, Souza's third

All the biggest results were achieved with a bit of luck, looking back. So, Vanni got the first seed's lot after the first seed gave up here in Sao Paolo. He had a free first round, but that was a good thing because he already played three qualifier matches. He was fighting against an opponent he faced in the qualifiers in the battle for the quarterfinal. He threw a big surprise yesterday by defeating Dušan Lajović. The same player who defeated him in straight sets in Quito last week. Now the Italian got even in a match that matters even more result-wise.

Luca is having the time of his life, all just before his 30th birthday. He made some progress at the challengers last year, now he's playing an ATP tournament final.

- This is a dream come true. I only had two ATP wins in my career, and now I'm among the top players. I think I'll be a Top 100 soon if I continue to play like this - Vanni said.

The Italian will be the first player  since 2006 who played both the qualifiers and the semifinal here. And he earned it, we might add. He had good serve game, losing his first hit only once, in the first game of the match. After that, he had 11 consecutive serve games. But, the thing that got him the win was the fact that he had a better percentage of second serve points. Of course, with many more free points Lajović gave him.

- At this level of tennis, every game and every point matters for the win. I was focused, even in the first game which I lost. Then I started serving better. You can't give the points away against players like these - Vanni said. He's by far the most pleasant surprise of the tournament. If he won the tournament, he'd get into the Top 100, and with a win today, he'd be close to it:

- My family is proud. They always believed in me, even when I had a bad time after the injury and surgery.

The Italian has a good serve, as he showed in Quito where he held all right against Lajović, whom he even defeated here despite Lajović's good form. So, Vanni should definitely not be underestimated. Both his opponents were favorites against him in the Sao Paolo main lot, and both left the court defeated.

Souza played two ATP semifinals in his career, so this situation is not news to him as it is to Vanni. Those were the times when he was a lot younger and his game was captivating, but then he started oscillating and so on. But, that doesn't change the fact that the Brazilian knows what it's like to be in a situation like this one.

- I was still very young in Santiago five years ago. I remember I lost to Monaco who was in the Top 20 then. I felt the pressure in the end. I had my chance in Kitzbuhel a year after that. I lost the third set to Haase, but I played well - Souza reminisced.

While Vanni won two matches as an outsider, Souza won three in Sao Paolo. After Carreno-Busta and Klizan, Mayer was defeated, too. The Argentinian started the match with a strong serve, but the Brazilian surprised him with a few deep returns in the ninth game, creating pressure. He managed to turn things around, and served 40-00 for the first set. However, a player of Mayer's caliber didn't allow Souza to get the momentum. His serve became stronger, he didn't Souza any chances, and he also created lots of chances with his return. He had a few games with break-balls, but the fourth one took them to the third set. For some reason, he didn't continue in that manner. He lost the first game of the third set right away, and couldn't get it back. Even though he won three return points more in that set, he couldn't fix the result.

This is an unexpected semifinal in Sao Paolo. The player who played the qualifiers against a player who got an invite, and both were out of the Top 100 coming to this tournament. They won five matches combined, despite being total outsiders, so no sense in saying they didn't deserve to be here. Now that they are here, the Brazilian is a favorite because of his past experience and previous results, but he doesn't feel like one.

- I'm not a favorite. I think all four players who get to the semifinals have the rhythm, are used to the courts, adjusted to the conditions. Vanni played good matches last year, too, and his ranking is improving. He's very dangerous, and he proved it - Souza said, but admitted:

- I'm much more experienced today. I'm more complete than when I played my first two semifinals. My game is relaxed and I'll try to control the match.
