Alejandro Falla - Jordi Samper-Montana (2:6 1:6)

Falla getting better each next round

  • Published:

Samper-Montana beat Souza easily, allowing him only one break-point. Falla opened the tournament badly but is getting better each next round to become the No.1 favorite for the title

Bucaramanga tournament is very important for Falla since he's defending the title and 80 points here. Since he wants to get back into Top 100, being only one spot short at the moment, he needs to defend the title to stay where he is now because everything else would see him drop spots in the table. We can be sure he's going to be motivated especially since playing home.

It was very obvious that Falla was a bit lost in the first round, that being his first clay-surface match of the season. It didn't get off to a good start, but it ended brilliantly and Falla went on to continue in the same manner against Donsky in the second round.

The Colombian opened the match brilliantly to take a 5-0 lead by winning three breaks. He lost one, but went on to use the very next service game for the set. Some problems were expected in the second set after that.

Neither opponent had a single break point until Donsky served at 4-4, when Falla converted his second break point and proceeded to serve for the match. But the drama went on as he missed to use a match point and lost his service game to allow the Russian to get back in the match. Falla won a break in the 11th game and then missed another match-point when serving. Donsky managed to force a tie break after saving two match points and took a 4-5 lead. But, the Colombian settle the match by winning three consecutive points. It should have been done 15 minutes earlier, but the most important thing was the fact he won in straight sets.

Samper-Montana, Falla's quarterfinals opponent, play two very different matches. He lost a total of 4 games in the first round meeting with Kim, three of which were his service games. Given Souza's quality and good game in high altitudes, the Spaniard was expected to have a tough task in the next round. It was quite tough but no one could imagine that Samper-Montana won't lose a single service game and allow Souza only one break point.

The only break point was in the very first game when Souza turned 30-00 into 30-40. Tie break decided the first set, even though the Spaniard maybe should have settle things earlier. He had three break points mid-set and simply couldn't use them. It seems like the tie break is what caused the final defeat for Souza since he had the 4-1 lead to go on and lose 4 straight points, after which he lost confidence.

Souza was harmless in the second set against Samper Montana's services, while Spaniard managed to convert his break point in the seventh set. And that was pretty much it.

That was a great win for Samper Montana since he knocked out one of the favorites for the title. He is now to face defending champion Falla, who was displaying improvements in both matches here to prove he's always one of the favorites for the title in Colombia, even at ATP level (Bogota).
