Guillaume Rufin - Lamine Ouahab (6:3 2:6 1:6)

Ouahab has been waiting on a challenger semifinal for almost five years

  • Published:

It might be strange that a qualifier and a player who got in on a wild card are set to meet in a semifinal match, but Rufil is much better than his ranking would suggest, while Ouahab always does better home than in other countries

Rufin was one of the prime contenders for the title ever since the start of this tournament. His win over the No.1 seed in the first round saw him promoted to the favorite. Rufin has been doing great since qualifying matches, which was a great sign of his plan to get back in Top 100 today, which he lost after the break caused by an injury.

He opened the quarter final match with Machado as the favorite, but failed to live up to that role early in the match. Machado had the consistency, didn't make a lot of mistakes, while Rufin's attack did nothing to break his game. All of that resulted in Machado taking a 5-1 lead in the first set. The Portuguese seemed to be headed for winning the first set, but he instead stopped and went on to lose the next 9 straight games!

Machado served for the set twice, had 5 set-points in three different service games and shocking loss of first set clearly left consequences on his confidence.

In a match such as that one, stats and numbers don't really paint the accurate picture of what was happening on the court. Machado had it all in the first set, while being left with no chance in the second one. When someone fails to use five set points in three different service games, there's no point in talking about service point percentages or conversion of break points. What is it that happened exactly? The Frenchman got lucky, it's as simple as that. He did nothing special, played the first few set points just like all the other points before them. When he saved the first few, Machado got nervous. When Rufin won the first set, Machado lost it and went on to make a lot of mistakes and lost all the consistency he had for the most part of the first set.

- I find it difficult to come to terms with this defeat. I opened the match brilliantly, served for the set twice and I failed. My opponent knew what to do at key points, and as the first set came to its end, his game was getting better - Machado said.

While Rufin had to go through a lot of first-set drama, Ouahab won his QF match without much struggle. He managed to beat Ungur easily and a bit unexpectedly.

Lamine proved once again that his best performances are always happening in his homeland. Nikola Mektic turned out to be his toughest opponent on the road to semifinals. He failed to use a set-point and lost his service-game for the first set, after which his game fell apart. That happened in the second round game.

Ouahab opened the Ungur match brilliantly. He managed to win a break in the first game, while managing to save five break points in the 4 game. He then went on to win another break in the following game, while Ungur seemed to have lost power and couldn't find a way of winning his service games.

He lost the his four service games in the second set, leaving him with no chance of making a comeback, even though he was better in return. 44% of his first serves were a great chance for Ouahab, which he used to reach his first challenger since Rome in 2010. Don't be fooled by that - Lamine's game is great, and is always even better home.
