Florent Serra - Pere Riba (6:4 6:7 6:4)

Serra puts together challenger victories for the second time this season

  • Published:

Riba saved three tied match points against Gil in the first round, and just waltzed through in the second one. The fact this is only the second time Serra put together challenger wins speaks volumes about the kind of season he's been having

Pere Riba's great performances in the first part of the season got him Top 100 status. He went into ATP tournaments, getting paid at the elite level, but completely lost his rhythm. He also had some minor health issues, and one could say he was not too happy with his form when he came to Reunion, especially compared to the start of the season when he was one of the most dominant challenger players.

He had his first big test in the first round, due to bad luck in the draw. Although Gil is terribly ranked, the Portuguese was one of the better opponents here. Riba was hanging high and dry in the third set tie-break, as Gill had three consecutive match points. He failed to convert them and the Spaniard somehow climbed back from the abyss. He was aware, even back then, that Gil would be his toughest opponent and that easier tasks would follow. A bit of a paradox, but such is the luck of the draw.

His second round opponent was Rousset, and the first segment brought a decisive win for Riba. Although he had to save two break points, he did pull off a double break that showed the Frenchman that he has little to hope for in terms of surprising his opponent. The second set did bring us a bit more excitement, as Riba held a break advantage but lost it in the sixth game. Everything went smoothly prior to that, and then he had to save a break point at 4-4. The Frenchman drummed up some courage during that period and who knows where the match could have ended if he had managed to take Riba's serve and serve to even up the set score. Instead, the opposite took place, with the Frenchman losing his serve in the very next game, and lost the match as well soon after.

This meant Riba put together two victories for the first time in over a month. Today he has the chance to secure the semifinal against Serra, yet another Frenchman who's seen much better days in his career as he is currently worst ranked in 13 years, which speaks volumes about the way he performed this year. He is becoming less relevant in the futures as well, but he did put together two challenger victories here, a feat achieved only for the second time this season.

He did have to save two set points in the tenth game of the first set during his first round game, but afterwards he dominated against Lopez-Perez. The second round brought Horanski, another player who resisted for just a set. Serra took a break, the Slovak won it back in the eighth game, but went under trying to secure a tie-break.

Just like in the previous match, that course of events boosted Serra's confidence, or perhaps it was more that it demoralized his opponent, who did not manage to win a game in the second set and left the court with his head down.

The Serra situation is somewhat strange now, as he's had a terrible season but managed to win two consecutive matches here. He did have a good draw, being the favorite in both matches, as he played against two futures players. However, here the surface, meaning the somewhat faster conditions, are what favors him. Two victories cannot erase a season of bad performance, but should be kept in mind. Riba, on the other hand, could have left this tournament in the first round.
