Grigor Dimitrov - Andy Murray (3:6 3:6)

Win would secure Murray a Final Masters spot

  • Published:

Dimitrov has, with a convincing game, beat Cuevas and confirmed that he's ready for today's challenge. Besides, he beat Murray this season in his own back yard. The Scotsman continued his winning streak, but he doesn't see today's match as a chance for revenge

Murray came to Paris as the lead in the race for London - of course, for the remaining spots. It was well-earned because he won the last two tournaments, and his winning streak began in Asia. In the Canadian Masters he lost only from the best. That's why in the Shenzhen and Valencia finals he saved a total of 10 match-points, five in each, both time against Roberdo. Be that as it may, in this match he needs a win to officially secure the Masters.

- It won't be a relief, it will be pleasure. It's important to enjoy such moments because if you only feel relief after success, then you're doing something wrong. I'm pleased and happy because lately I've won a lot of matches, some of which were very hard. Considering the first half of the season, I'm happy to have entered the Masters battle. It would be a nice prize for all the effort - Murray commented the London chase which will come to him today in case of a win, although losing doesn't deprive him of the chance either.

Although the Brit has behind him the titles in Vienna and Valencia and a couple of difficult matches, one against Benneteau, he didn't seem tired. In fact, he started the match nicely against the sometimes very unpleasant Frenchman. He took the lead with 3-0 and kept the lead on the serve. There was no tension in the second set either. The double break lead was minimized by the home player, but wasn't reached. The Scotsman needed only 73 minutes to pass with 20 winners and only nine unforced errors.

- To be honest, Benneteau pushed me with his game at the beginning of the meeting - the Scotsman admitted, and then turned to his next opponent who's also aiming at London:

- Yes, I've lost against Dimitrov at Wimbledon, but I'm not looking to get even. Such an attitude is never useful. It will be just another match against a very difficult opponent. It's important that I'm in the right rhythm and that I'm playing better than I do during the most of the season. I hope to continue my good streak.

Dimitrov arrived to Paris with minimum chances for the Masters. He would have to win this tournament in order to be safe, and that would also earn him the title of his career because he's never won a title like this. The Bulgarian opened the tournament against Cuevas who also had a motive: the Grand Slam seed title, but he didn't have the game for the conditions. Although the Uruguayan is a big fighter and a hard worker, he was helpless against the Bulgarian. That was a big class difference.

The Bulgarian needed only 25 minutes to win the first set. He did it without a game lost, although there was a lot of fighting on the return. In the last game Cuevas had a couple of chances to defend his honor, but he lost the serve for the third time in a row. Although he stopped the flood, Cuevas didn't manage to reef the mainsail. He again lost the serve early and after that Dimitrov held the serve convincingly until the end. A fast win, that was what he needed the most before meeting the Scotsman.

- The race is tight and each win could be important. There are a lot of combinations, but that's more interesting for the audience. As for me, there's no pressure. If I don't earn the Masters this season, I've only postponed that success - Dimitrov seemed relaxed after a convincing win.

This could definitely be the best match of the day. Although Dimitrov doesn't have a winning streak like the Scotsman, he's put up a good fight in defeats against Federer and Berdych. He's aware that there's not a lot of chance of reaching Paris, but these are the matches he wants to win and thus show everyone that he deserves the Top 10 status.
