Serena Williams - Simona Halep (0:6 2:6)

Serena after another record

  • Published:

Serena likes records, and that's no secret. Now she's in a 16-win streak in the finals, and Navratilova is the only one in front of her with 21 wins. Serena and Halep both did their first matches in two sets, and last year the first player of the world convincingly won both mutual matches

Not a new hall, not injuries which probably messed up her preparations for Singapore, not even the sexist statement of the first man of the Russian tennis federation managed to stop the first tennis player of the world to open another edition of the Masters finals with another win. Serena proved once more that she loves records; a lot of them are held by her herself, and she's still hunting for some others. One of them is here in Singapore. Currently she's in a 16-streak win in such a final, and Navratilova holds five more. If you ask Serene, the record hunt is on again.

Winning the US Open title Serena took a lot of pressure off her back, and we can freely say that she saved the season with that title. Asia wasn't done in the best way possible, she canceled one tournament because of illness, the second because of a knee injury and it was questionable in what condition will she arrive on this tournament.

- I felt a bit of my knee injury, but what happened in Beijing can't be compared to this. I felt far better - said Serene after winning against Ivanovic.
Ivanovic knew how to "spice it up" for Serena this year. She resisted well, had a good match, but was defeated again in the end. Serena had 4-1 in the first set, Ivanovic returned with three consecutive games; she even had a break-point for 5-4, but she couldn't keep up the pace. Errors in key moments cost her a lot of things, and she admitted that herself after the match.

In the second set e saw the introductory change of service-taking. Then both players stood strong until the end of the set, or better yet match when Ivanovic failed at the serve for staying in the match. Serena pointed out after everything:

- I felt that my energy fell down a bit during my lead. I tried to do anything I could to return that energy and continue the fight. I'm very excited because of the way I played tonight. I worked hard and I'm glad to be here.

Serena didn't play the match on her top level, but that couldn't have been expected from her at the very start. Her body language was good, she admitted herself after the match that she had almost broken her vocal chords from saying 'come on' one too many times. That speaks volumes when Serena is concerned. The serve was good, half of the winners came after the ace serves (12), and twice she managed to lose the aforementioned one during the match. All in all, it was a solid match for a tournament opening after quite a bit of unknown factors tied to her physical state in Asia.

Halep, in her debut performance on the Top Eight Finals, convincingly beat another debut on this tournament. The Romanian also arrived with a lot of unknown factors when questioning her physical condition. She met Bouchard with a bandage over her thigh, but she didn't give away any problems during the match.

- I went home, went to treatments every day and I feel really good. I trained just like any other day, but I still have my muscle protection - Halep pointed out.

She was too firm for Bouchard, far more consistent and she knew how to punish her opponent's bad moves in that match. She lost half less points on her serve (26-13) and allowed for only two break-points without losing the serve once. Everything came together in that match, from the game in which she opened a lot of corners to the serve, and to her opponent's bad game who didn't seem like a player with maximum readiness at that point.

- I'm really happy to have found my game again. I was aggressive, did some winners and played well - adds Halep, and says:

- I have a chance to win the tournament, but I don't want to think about it.

The tournament has only begun, Halep is aware of that, and there are a lot of steep steps to reach the potential finals. The first of them is Serena, a player who won against Halep three times in an equal number of mutual matches. Last year Halep convincingly lost both matches (it was played on hardcourt and clay). Serena was dominant in both matches with her strength, and there's no doubt something like that will happen today.
