Serena Williams - Ana Ivanović (6:4 6:4)

Serena struggled with Ivanovic in some of their head-to-head matches this season

  • Published:

Serena won the WTA Finals in 2012 and 2013 and plays the role of the favorite this year as well. But, the problems for her resurfaced after US Open and we have to wait and see what her performances here will be like. Ivanovic has had a great season, having recorded more wins this year than any other player

Serena went to play last year's Final Masters in Istanbul completely drained after a very tough season and despite the fatigue managed to claim the title. She won 7 titles, 73 matches, and had a streak of 34 wins that season. This one wasn't as successful (48 wins and 7 defeats) and we can't be sure what her shape is like today.

She struggled with injuries and her game from the start of the season, with her best performances happening at Wimbledon. The US Open title salvage her season, but as soon as she left America, the problems resurfaced preventing her from finishing either out of the two following tournaments.

- I started feeling pain this week, I didn't feel well the night before the match, I was in pain while sitting or standing. I decided to do the match in the last moment, but it hurt while serving - Serena said.

- I didn't have time for an MRI, but I will go to Europe to see what the problem is. If there is still pain, I don't think playing Singapore would be the best idea.

She came to Singapur and this is what she said:

- Surprisingly enough, I feel fin. I'm not nervous, I wasn't even sure I'll be playing here, but I do feel better than in China. I spoke to some doctors in Europe, and they said that playing before Monday would be bad. I had to stay off the court, which was very tough.

But, she seems to be ready and keen to display a good game here:

- I don't care who the opponent is to be honest. I can play anyone. I can't wait for my first match.

This is the ninth time Serena will play WTA Finals, her record so far being 25 wins and 5 defeats, with 4 titles. She won the last two of these tournaments. She only to Ivanovic, whom she meets today, at Australian Open this season.

Ivanovic has had a great season, having recorded more wins than any other year, and more wins than any other player this season. She is back to Top 10 and ready to fight for the top spot in the WTA table.

The Serbian media published an article about Ivanovic at one point this year, and as surprising as the way, Ivanovic confirmed it was accurate. She did really plan to retire 4 years ago and this is what she said about it:

- I've had bad periods, with the year 2010 being particularly bad. I remember telling my mom that I don't want to play tennis anymore. That is how I felt. But I kept on playing and at one point realized what is it that makes me love this game. The defeats and bad times made me tougher.

Ivanovic was concerned about doing well but not improving when it came to ranking in the first part of the season. But, she was well-aware that her ranking would get better if she kept up the good game. She is now more consistent, stable, and most importantly, more confident. The fact she managed to secure a spot at WTA Finals after 6 long years is the best proof of it.

- Doing well and recording good results was stressful for me in the past. I am now more experienced and know that I can enjoy it. I love competing, I love challenges and tough matches. I think that's showing both on and off the court. It's great to be back to Top 8 - Ivanovic said.

She did 4 tournaments after US Open, went to Tokyo to win it, advanced to semifinals in Beijing, but had to retire from Wuhan and Linz. This is what she said after Linz:

- I've struggled with this injury all summer long. I've made a tough decision, this is one of my favorite tournaments, I wanted my third title here, but that will have to wait till next year.

Ivanovic had enough time to adjust to the surface and conditions in Singapore. Her record with the rest of the Top 8 is 18-32, and 2-11 with the rest of her group. This will be Ivanovic and Williams' fifth head-to-head this season. Ivanovic won only once.

I think Serena's season was over when she lifted the US Open trophy. The entire second half of her season was about the US Open and something she said after that Grand Slam is very important. She said that she wants to focus on breaking the Grand Slam records.
We can expect her to try her best, particularly at Grand Slams. She is no longer very young and her knee isn't as it used to be. I'm sure she is well-aware of that, and that she won't do her absolute best here and in the matches to come. Ivanovic knows how what to do against Serena, she beat her once this season and won a set in two defeats. This is only a conformation of an excellent season, and she has nothing to lose today. This will be her chance to prove herself and a great start to the next season. I'm sure she will fight back, and since it's the first match and I don't believe Serena will go full throttle. I think Ivanovic definitely stands a chance.
