Tenis » Valencia (M), Hard court (indoor), 1st Round
21.10.2014. 17:40 Finished
Albert Ramos - Fabio Fognini (4:6 2:6)

The moody Italian to lose his coach?

  • Published:

Ramos passed the qualifying round with only one serve lost, but in this tournament he won only once in the main draw since it's played on hard court. Fognini got a penalty point last week and his behavior suggests that he can't wait for the season to end

Fognini is bursting at the seams. That's the impression the best-ranked Italian leaves. On the US Open he lost control yet again and earned himself another fine. He's obviously lost it when he admitted he has a problem. He even promised his father that he would behave well since his mood is driving the people close to him crazy. Instead of a calm ending of a season, he continued with the charades. He lost from the Chinese with an invitation, and then he flipped the bird to the line umpire. For that he got a $2,000 penalty. Moscow didn't change a thing. He finished the first set by shooting off the ball towards the ceiling of the hall, and he started the second set with a penalty point. Of course, he lost. It seems that the situation is even worse because the rumors that coach Jose Perlas has no patience for him are spreading like wildfire.

Perlas recently gave an interesting interview. He was talking about Fognini's injuries, his advancement and the reason for low scores. They had been working a lot on the serve, although it's not that obvious on the court, as well as on special exercises which avoid injuries that bother him all the time Still, the last scores haven't been a consequence of injuries.

- He expected too much out of himself, and the additional pressure was put with other people's expectations. He came close to entering the Top 10 and everyone thought it was the next logical step, but that's not as easy as they think it is. The Italian media love sensationalism. I know that he is guilty of a few things, but the press often forget that tennis players are also only human beings who can stress out - commented Perlas his current protege, but he didn't want to talk much about his potential work with David Ferrer.

- Fabio and I have a contract until the end of the season and then we'll see what's next. I know that Ferrer is planning to take a new coach. A lot of the reporters asked me if I'm the one. I can only say what I know, and that is that I'm currently working with Fognini.

Ramos is a classical clay-lover, but Valencia is not a classical indoor court. A lot of people are mentioning that the conditions in this tournament are very slow and that the surface gives way for a lot of rotation. That is a good thing for clay-lovers. If anything, Ramos gained a bit of confidence through the qualification rounds. He was the first seed and he justified that title. Although he scored a single ace in the first round, he won 82% of the first serve points. He lost a serve once and practically won two thirds of the second serve points on the return. He beat Cervantes in two sets. He was even more convincing against the uncomfortable Ward. He didn't even give him a break-point, and he lost only three points in the second throw (13-16). He realized three out of four chances on the return.

The Spaniard is, at this point, in the Top 70 and mainly thanks to the challengers. He realized that things were getting out of control and he calmed them down. In that way he won more than 200 ATP points on the last four challengers. He hardly earned €20,000, but the points are always more important at the end of the season. Regarding this tournament, he always struggled in the qualifications. He has only one win in the main draw since it's been played on indoor hard court, and against no other than Ram.
