David Goffin - Steve Darcis (6:3 6:3)

The finale organizers were hoping for

  • Published:

Darcis came here thanks to his protected ranking. He did not lose a single set on his way to the final and jumped a 100 positions on the ATP ranking. Goffin is currently on an 11 match winning streak and in Top 30 for the first time in his career

There were no stars in Mons this time, but although there were no strong names in a tournament that once had all eight seeds from the Top 100, the organizers must be happy now. Two local players in the semifinal were a crowd magnet, and they both got to the final as well. Goffin decided to come to Mons as an afterthought, he was basically coaxed into coming here. He took the invitation and automatically became one of the seeds, while Darcis took advantage of protected ranking. He will have it at Taškent as well, but just getting to the final here busted his ranking by a 100 positions, which is great for his confidence, as it was rather bruised a few weeks ago.

Goffin continued with another winning series. His first major streak was stopped by Janowicz at Winston-Salem, back then he was at 25 victories. Now he has 11 in a row (all indoors), which includes the title at Metz, his second ATP level title this season. After three two-set victories, he finally met proper resistance in Ilhan, who lacks the talent of Zverev of the return aggression of Bachinger but his tennis resembles more that of Goffin. The Turkish player managed to parry for two sets but then Goffin just steamrolled over him.

The first 10 games were won by whomever served, and then Goffin made his single deciding break. He had no chance on return in the second set, something the Belgian rarely witnessed in the recent months. Ilhan won 13 of his 14 serving points during that period. Although he tied the score in sets, he failed to worry the top seed. Goffin saved all three break points and converted his two chances on return, leaving the Turk at one game in the last segment.

-  After I injured my wrist I started from scratch with my coach. We worked hard for all this and I have no idea where my limit is. I know it's a great step from here to the Top 10, and I don't want to bother with figures right now. I need results from Series 1000 and Grand Slam tournaments, that's the most important thing- said Goffin last week, while he is currently 27th in the world, his career best ranking.

Olivier Rochus retired a few days ago, and Darcis spoke of ending his career as well. Once, eight years ago, he was a Top 50 player. Up to last year he managed to end two seasons within Top 100, which is the primary goal of any successful tennis player. He was able to achieve that by combining tournaments such as this one with the ATP level, but injuries slowed him down. He would have probably traded all those months of rehab for a win against Nadal at Wimbledon. This caused him to decline and he almost dropped out of Top 500 two months ago. Although positive by nature, he was doubtful prior to Mons:

- I can barely see the light at the end of the tunnel. I thin, and hope, that the biggest pain, doubts and lack of confidence are behind me. The Mons challenger should make some things clearer for me. I'll take some more time, sum it up after the first half of next year, but if I'm still hovering about 400th position then, it might be time to end it.

If Mons was supposed to be a turning point, he could not have wished for a better plot. Not only did he reach the final and gain 100 spots in ranking, he did not lose a set in four matches. His first round brought an unpleasant opponent, Israeli Sela, who is playing one of his best seasons, while the semifinal saw the defeat of Vesely, currently 70th in the world.

The Czech won three 3-set matches in a row, two of which through a tie breaker. If we keep in mind he also reached the semifinal last week, once can conclude fatigue played its part. Whatever the case may be, Darcis played his part to perfection. He left the third seed without a break point, and converted one break in each set. He lost just 10 serving points and got to his first challenger final since Ostrava in May last year.

Darcis and Goffin met once before, three years ago, and Darcis won back then, but the roles have reversed now. Both played for Belgium in the Davis Cup recently, and must have practiced together a lot. The match is more important to Darcis, no doubt about it, as he is in dire need of points, but this will also be a match for prestige. Two local players in the final bring a special atmosphere to the match.
