David Goffin - Matthias Bachinger (7:5 6:2)

Goffin: I know I'm expected to win the title

  • Published:

The Belgian struggled early in the match, won the close first set, but then sailed through to the next round. Bachinger managed to beat Mahut in a very close match to get back in the Top 200. His game deserves much better ranking

After a successful Davis Cup weekend (two wins) and an ATP title in Metz, Goffin decided to accept the invitation to participate at a challenger tournament in his native Belgium despite currently holding position 31 in the ATP table.

- I'm the No.1 seed here and everyone expects me to win the title, but that is never an easy task. I'm happy to be here because I don't get to play home that often. I hope I'll be able to take advantage of that - Goffin said.

First rounds are often the toughest ones, and Goffin's struggle with Huta early in their match only went to prove it. Having saved 7 out of the 8 break points the opponent had, the Belgian managed to win the first set in tie-break. After that, he sailed through the second set, not allowing the opponent to win any breaks. His confidence is high and he has no reason to regret not being in Asia since the winner here gets 125 ATP points.

Bachinger was not even in Top 200 in the ATP list ahead of this week, but his game is not as bad as the ranking would suggest. The German sailed through the US Open qualifying matches, having lost only 14 games in 3 matches to go on and beat Stepanek in the first round. He was forced to do the qualifying matches here as well, but did it convincingly, without losing a single service game against a good opponent.

On the other hand, Mahut is doing worse than his ranking would suggest, which is why he is no longer in Top 100. Not even playing indoors can get the best out of him. His match with the German was very close, with only a few points deciding its outcome. But, despite having the same number of points (102), and the same break-point efficiency(2/7), Bachinger was more successful when it came to crucial points. Mahut had only 2 aces in 15 service games, which is definitely not normal for him. Bachinger is now facing the No.1 seed and one of the best players in the world the past few months. But again, when doing well, Bachinger cannot be written off, especially because of his aggressive game against the opponent's service. Players like that can always surprise you.
