John Isner - Tommy Robredo (3:6 7:5 7:6)

Four of the seven sets they played ended in tie breaks

  • Published:

Robredo offered Seppi 23 break points in the first two sets, while he allowed just one in three sets a week earlier against the same player. Although he showed lack of confidence, Isner is a different match-up and we can expect few breaks here

Robredo did not make it past the first round in his last three appearances at Peking. Truth be told, he had no luck with the draw, but the statistic is still unpleasant. It was expected that he will end it against Seppi, whom he beat a week earlier in Shenzen and it came true, but the match was a complete opposite to their previous one.

Back then Robredo offered the Italian just a single break point in three sets and never lost his serve, in a match whose hallmark was a solid serve, while yesterday was quite the opposite.

We witnessed 39 break points in a completely chaotic match which Robredo managed to win in the end. It's a bit futile to speak of the development of the first two sets as each could have ended both 6-0 and 0-6, with both players scoring a lot of break points. In the 19 service games of the first two sets, only five had no break points, which speaks volumes about this 'WTA' match between the Spaniard and the Italian.

However, Seppi had a chance to end the match in two sets. Having somehow won the first set, he served for the match in the second. However, he lost his serve, and then allowed 9 more break points in the 11th game to get one more serve for the match. He paid for that in the tie break, and when Robredo got another one in the third set, he did not allow a single break point.

Robredo won, it was not nice but a win is a win. However, it is somewhat surprising that his serve was so poor, especially after his great performance at Shenzen. He offered Seppi 23 break points in the first two sets, which is a luxury he won't be able to afford against Isner. Although the American may not be as good as Seppi on returns, he uses his chances well and plays well in important points. He built his career on that, as we could once again see in his first round match against Santiago Giraldo.

The American started well and took a 3-0 lead. The key moment of the first set took place in the fifth game, when he saved three break points and then won the set with one more break. He lost just three service points in the second set and easily won it. Isner scored 14 aces and can once again be expected to perform well in that segment, as well as on first serve points.

- I'm glad I won today, and have another difficult match tomorrow- said Isner prior to his duel against Robredo.

The two faced each other three times, and each time the first set ended in a tie break. Four of the seven sets they played ended in tie breaks as well. The last time they played this season, on clay in Roland Garros, the match went to four sets, three of which were tie breaks, while one was extra long. Robredo was shaky on his serve earlier, but this is a new match.
