Serena won 13 out of the 15 previous games against Soler

Serena was down 0-5 in the first set, and forced to save 4 set points. She opened the match against Soler badly, but the opponent was helpless once she started serving better. The forfeit in Wuhan last week must have had an impact on her. Pironkova, on the other hand, recorded her second WTA win since Roland Garros

Serena didn't do as planned in Wuhan last week. She never did tournaments prior to the one in Beijing in the previous years, but decided to do Wuhan this year. Vertigo and nausea, however, forced her to retire against Cornet in Wuhan opener. She was far from her usual self, having struggled with serving and her game. Her opening match against Soler here wasn't perfect either.

- I didn't want to lose the set without winning a single game - Serena said after that match.

Yes, as weird as it might sound, Serena was very close to losing the first set without winning a single game. We are used to her opponents not being able to win games, but not her. Serena's game in that first set was horrible, her shots powerless, and her running slow. But, as soon as Soler had a few set points, Serena kicked it up a notch and lost only two games till the end of the match.

- I definitely wanted to play more matches here. I'm really excited for it. I fought hard - Serena said.

In the first five games, Serena was more a bystander than anything else. The problems she experienced last week were clearly still present. But, as soon as she pulled it together, Soler didn't stand a chance. Serena is defending the title here, having one it last year in straight sets. But, it was questionable whether she will even be here this year.

- I wasn't sure if I would be fit enough to do Beijing. I've finally made the decision that I am, and I'll see how things turn out on the court. I have more energy and feel much better - Serena said.

Once she broke the ice, her game, her moving, and her serving got better. She is now facing Pironkova, a player known for giving Serena a hard time in the previous head-to-head matches. But, Pironkova has finished three previous seasons on a bad record. Her last head-to-head meeting with Serena was in 2011, the season Pironkova finished with 15 wins and 26 defeats. If she didn't have that title from Sydney this year, this would surely have been another season ended with more defeats then wins. 

Pironkova had to wait for 6 months to record two consecutive wins. It happened here in Beijing, just like her second main draw win at WTA level since Roland Garros. She beat Kirilenko in straight sets. Kirilenko did badly in that match, and failed to take advantage of the opponent being one break down in the first set.
