Paul-Henri Mathieu - Benjamin Becker (7:6 7:6)

Mathieu is turning into an old grouch

  • Published:

Becker has maintained his ranking in recent years with challengers but he's going through his second youth this season. Mathieu won four points against Đoković in New York and then blamed the organizers for that. After that, he lost another match against 17-year-old Zverev, for the second time in 3 months

Mathieu deserves praised after what he's gone through. When he injured his knee in Basel in 2010, it was not sure whether or not he would play ever again. He went through a very complicated surgery and had to learn how to walk again. Everything changed, he didn't even think about tennis. He missed the entire 2011 and then returned the following year. He emphasized that the results weren't important and that he just wants to enjoy tennis. His modesty lasted until he reached Top 100 again. Then his ambitions grew but he could no longer fight for the top spot. He just can't accept the fact that he doesn't have what it takes to fight for the top spots and that's why he's constantly complaining.

There is no defeat after which Mathieu doesn't have a thing or two to say. Madrid is not a normal tournament for him as the conditions are too fast, he doesn't like playing against servers as that's not tennis and so on and so forth. He beat Muller in New York after five sets. He didn't complain about the Luxembourg player getting 40 aces. He won the match and was happy to conclude he has the power to handle marathon matches. He even hoped he could do something against Đoković but the Serb quickly burst his bubble. Even though the No.1 player allowed him to take only 4 games, 0 in the third set, the Frenchman still complained.

- I had a feeling as if I were playing on another tournament. The conditions on the Arthur Ashe stadium are twice as fast than on the other courts, especially the one I played on in the first round. We have to change that. It's not fair this way as I got only an hour to train on that court while the players from the top play and train on it all the time. It's not fair.

Mathieu got 40 points less in these fast conditions and had only two aces but it's not so important now. After that, he went to a domestic challenger to leave a better impression but he got a deja vu. In Braunschweig finals, he missed out on one-set advantage against young Zverev. He said he didn't know him too well then. He got a new chance on more preferable hard court now but this time, he didn't even take a single set against the young German. He was left with 6 games and 7 unused break-chances.

Becker left the US Open in the first round but he has a good reason to be happy. One can expect him to get a few more wins until the end as the indoor part of the season is coming and that's always been his favorite. This means that he will probably have more ATP wins this season than in last 3 combined. Considering he's maintained his ranking in last few years through challengers, few people expected the German to play so well at the top level. He did just that.

He reached the finals in Hertogenbosch and promised to get back to this tournament which, according to him, brings out the best of him. He played the entire American Tour and got 6 ATP wins, primarily due to Atlanta semi-finals. Nothing can be said about his defeat against Gojowczyk in New York. His compatriot is a Top 30 player when he's in the zone, and even Nadal and Tsonga felt that this season. He played a great match and almost surprised Raonic in the following round. Becker was simply outplayed in his match.

Mathieu got a wild card for the main draw on account of his older results. He ended his last 3 appearances here with 2 wins but he used to go all the way. He played the finals six years ago. In terms of H2Hs, the Frenchman is up by 2-1 and he won the last match. It was an indoor match but at a challenger in Luxembourg. He won 86% of points on his first serve, which is probably something he'd gladly accept today as well.
