Tenis » Tokyo (W), Hard court, 2nd Round
18.09.2014. 07:25 Finished
Garbine Muguruza - Jelena Janković (7:6 6:4)

Jankovic got to Tokyo quite late

  • Published:

Jankovic has been having a great time in Belgrade after being knocked out in US Open fourth round. She might struggle with adjusting here, as she said it herself. Muguzura has already done one match here, having beaten Pavyuchenova

Muguruza left a great impression last season proving that her being Spanish doesn't mean clay is her favorite surface. Modern tennis is all about power, and Muguruza can be aggressive in a clever way. That helped her improve her ranking last year, but her season was over the moment she decided to undergo an ankle surgery. She clearly can't do without tennis since she practiced even while she couldn't still walk - sitting in a chair.

She picked up where she left off, started doing well again, which helped her ranking and her confidence, but it also made the expectations higher. The pressure has been a huge burden on her back, making her performances weaker:

- Expectations changed after Roland Garros. Reaching quarter final is now considered no big deal. I want to do it but my head is stopping me since these girls are not better than me. I was not in a few matches this season, mentally. I have been working with a psychologist.

She describes her head-to-head meeting with Lucic as the worst match she had this season. She has no points to defend now, which should take off some of the pressure. She beat Pavluchenkova here in straight sets, having served much better and managing to control her shots better than the Russian.

- I got better since the last time I was here. I'm happy with this season, but I want to keep on winning - Muguzura said.

Jankovic reached her goal of getting back in the Top 10 last season. She has been a Top 10 player for the most part of the season and she's still very close, currently being ranked as No.11. Her performances after Roland Garros were no longer as good - she recorded defeats to Serena and Coco on grass. Her draw at US Open was favorable, allowing her to win the first three matches in straight sets. She was knocked out to Bencic, who went on to beat Kerber, another Top 10 player.

- I didn't know her game well, I didn't see much of it, but she probably saw a lot of mine - Jankovic said.

She was knocked out in round 3 in Tokyo last year, after beating Morita in the second round (was given a first round bye just like this year). Bochard beat her in the next round in straight sets. Jankovic reached the Beijing final a week later and lost it to Serena. Since she got to Tokyo quite late, she admitted that adjustment might be a problem.
