Borna Coric - Egor Gerasimov (6:2 6:4)

Borna Čorić has so far been the most convincing player on this tournament

  • Published:

After an hour against Bozoljac, he need only 40 minutes against Shyla. He lost only 1 game, thus confirming his great form here. Gerasimov is a more dangerous player than Silva but it seems everything depends on Borna today

A lot has been said about Borna Čorić this year and rightfully so. This 17-year-old has constantly confirmed he's one of the most young players with a very bright future and he has adapted to the senior level with fascinating ease. He has so far passed into the main draw of several ATP tournaments, with the last one the biggest of them all (US Open), where he got his first Grand Slam performances. But he didn't stop there and he also got his first win on it (Rosol), thus drawing more attention to himself.

A lot has been said about him ahead of recent Davis Cup match between Netherlands and Croatia when he took over as one of the leaders of the team, even though he was unable to show that on the court. He was defeated by a very good player (Haase), but at least he got a new experience that will do him good in the future.

Even though his knee was mentioned a lot before and after this match, he emphasized that everything is alright, as reflected in his performance here. He has immediately decided to make a new change of conditions that obviously sat well with him. He's had two convincing wins, impressive in fact. First he handled Bozoljac in an hour, then he got an even more convincing win. He beat the Belarus qualifier Shyla in only 41 minutes, losing only 1 game in the process. There's no point discussing his domination after this win, but we should added that he had a 94% first serve efficiency and didn't allow a single break chance.

Borna is facing his new challenge in another Belarus player, but a more experienced one - Gerasimov. This 21-year-old has been on a constant upward trajectory and has been very successful at the challenger level after last year's futures, especially at hard court ones where his best assets come into fruition. He's a very aggressive player with a good serve, which he has shown so far. He won 70% of his points against Rudnev in the last round from his serve and he didn't allow a single break. He saved both break chances while being convincing on the other end with 3/4 success rate to get into this quarterfinal in a calm manner.

This will be his third quarterfinal at this level and he has been successful every time. But he's faced weaker players than the young Croat whose class makes him a huge favorite today.
