Kei Nishikori - Milos Raonic (4:6 7:6 6:7 7:5 6:4)

The Canadian getting through on tie-breaks

  • Published:

Since Washington, his first match after Wimbledon, Raonic's score in tie-breaks is incredible 15-1. He's been below par here but he's won all six tie-breaks. Nishikoris is hoping his return on hard court will be easier. He had no solution for the Canadian bomber at Wimbledon

In three matches that Raonic has played at the US Open this year, he's lost only one set. It seems convincing, but his six sets went into the tie-break and the Canadian won each one. Even though he's playing a like a Wild West gunman, he's so far been efficient when he needed to the most. He'll take solace in that even though he's aware he'll have to do better for his next match.

Estrella is going through the best moments of his career at 34 years of age. He's reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time and then he faced one of the best servers on the Tour, but he didn't get the stage-fright. In fact, he got three breaks against the Canadian and even though he made two breaks in one set, he still lost three as Raonic beat him in every tie-break. The Canadian ended the match with 22 winners and 89% of points on his first serve. A total of 46 unforced errors will ruin his impression but that's his style - aggressive to the very end, despite lower efficiency.

- I've been very successful in tie-breaks this season. I'm playing well when it matters the most and that was the case against Estrella. I know I have to do better in the next match. Luckily for me, I usually improve after matches like this - Raonic commented his impressive 29-9 tie-break score this year.

Nishikori was doubtful ahead of this tournament. The Japanese player often struggles with injuries and before NY, he had to operate a cyst on his foot. His nervousness quickly subsided and he hasn't lost a single set after three matches. However, he did have a favorable draw - three opponents that play the best on clay. Mayer was definitely the strongest opponent, at least in theory. The Argentine came to the US Open with the best ranking of his carer but it didn't help him as the Japanese allowed him to get only 10 games and lost his serve only once. The Argentine missed the remaining 9 break chances and won only 1/3 of points on his second serve.

- I was afraid about my foot in the first round but now I'm full of confidence. I'm ready - the Japanese discarded any doubts about his performance, but now he has to face Raonic, the man who beat him at Wimbledon earlier this year.

- I hope things will be easier on the return, even though the conditions here are also fast. His serve is not dangerous just because of its speed. He has a good kick and knows how to place it. I have done well on the return here so far so I'm hoping for a good day.

Nishikori lost that match at the Wimbledon after winning the first set, but he had won two matches before it. They also played in Madrid this year. Nishikori is one of rare players that can brag about taking two tie-breaks against the Canadian in the same match. Nishikori believes he can do more than at the Wimbledon and he has a good reason. Hard court is the best surface for both players but grass is the easiest court for service winners. As far as the Canadian goes, he didn't mention a change in tactics, which means his plan will be the same as usual - holding his serve and waiting for a chance on the return. If nothing else, he's comfortable in tie-breaks.
