Barbora Zahlavova Strycova - Petra Kvitova (4:6 1:6)

Kvitova dealt with Makarova in 49 minutes

  • Published:

The Czech player got revenge on the Russian for the Montreal defeat, pointing out that the court is faster than in Cincinnati, which suits her. Zahlavova beat Bencic and Garcia, but is an underdog against Kvitova

Kvitova arrived to New Haven after two early defeats in Montreal and Cincinnati which left a lot of questions hanging for her and her fans. Maybe this tournament seemed like a bad idea prior to those two big ones, but after everything that's happened, New Haven seems like her last chance to win a few matches in a row, lift here confidence and get into her rhythm prior to the last Grand Slam of the season.

- It's very hard to play after Wimbledon. I felt empty, with no drive or desire to fight- said Kvitova after the first round match in New Haven.

There was plenty of that against Makarova. Although the match did not start well, with Makarova taking a 0-2 lead, and everything looking like we'd see a rerun of Montreal, it turned out Makarova won just a single game more in the remainder of the match.

Analyzing what changed in those two weeks, its clear Kvitova played a much better and more consistent match. In Montreal she had a 53% first serve, while she was at 72% this time. When Petra has her first serve in line, its a different story altogether. Adding to that was 9/11 second serve points won, another figure worth noting. This was by far the deadliest match Petra played since Wimbledon.

- After a slow start I began to play more aggressively and started moving better. I played a good match today- said the Czech player.

Another reason for her better performance might be the speed of the surface. Kvitova later said:

- The first time I came to practice I felt rather well. The surface is faster than the one in Cincinnati, which suits my tennis.

Looking back, over the last two seasons Kvitova played in the final here, and has one title. It seems these courts really suit her, and if that is so, she is definitely a title contender, especially now Simona Halep is gone.

- I'll try to find motivation for another good series prior to the Grand Slam tournament- said the second seed player.

Her opponent in the quarterfinal is a compatriot, Zahlavova Strycova. She had a great season, but had little luck with the draw after Wimbledon. In Montreal she ran into Radwanska in the second round, in Cincinnati it was Stephens, also in the second round. Here in New Haven she beat Bencic and Garcia, and now faces another tough opponent in Kvitova.

She got through the first round after a true gladiatorial battle against the young Swiss player, and although she got past the French in two sets in the second round, it was not that simple, and she had to fight for dear life in the first set.

Garcia had a break advantage and lost it, but failed to take advantage of as many as five set-points on return in the 10th game. After that she did not win a game in the remainder of the first set, and practically fell apart in the second, losing five sets in a row overall, which is where it was all over.

- I feel great. I love the sport, I love traveling more than I used to before. I see things differently and admire them more than before- said the Czech after her victory, talking of the suspension she was under for doping:

- When that happened, I would not play tennis any more. I was not strong enough to come back, but with some help from friends I knew I was not out yet.

Her friends can't help here here. She will have to fight for victory alone, on court, against Petra Kvitova who beat her a month ago at Wimbledon. Zahlavova has a negative 1-4 score against Kvitova, who plays well against her home players in general. Her score against the three best ranked compatriots after her (Safarova, Koukalova, Zahlavova)
is 12-1.
