Sara Errani - Sabine Lisicki (1:6 5:7)

Errani's first match on hardcourt since March

  • Published:

After she was stopped in Bad Gastein semifinal, Errani took a break and will play in Montreal after more than 20 days break. Lisicki played one hardcourt match already and lost 0-2 against Ana Ivanovic

After she got two defeats in two matches on grass, Sara went to Bad Gastein. Despite the disappointment on grass, she won the title in the doubles so she didn't lack self-confidence. Her opponents in Bad Gastein weren't strong, so she managed to defeat Siniakova, Ormaechea and Scheepers, and get to the semifinal.

Errani made another mistake in that semifinal. The young Rogers took initiative and scored winners in faster conditions, because of the altitude. The Italian ended the match without winning a set, and will play in Montreal after a three weeks long break. There, she'll be defending the round of 16, but judging by the form she showed this year (7/7 on hardcourt), she doesn't really stand a chance for defending the points.

On the other hand, Sabina Lisicki is a different story. She showed once again that she can surprise us on the grass, and she played Wimbledon quarterfinals. Just like most of the players, she took a break later on and got back to tennis a week ago in Stanford. She played against Ana Ivanovic in the first round, and Ana managed to get even for the defeat in Wimbledon.

Sabina had some chances in the first set, but couldn't use them, and lost the set in the tie-break. In the second set, she failed completely, gave up and only won one game. A defeat that hard was contributed by her second service, she gave two breaks away to Ivanovic by making two double errors. Still, she didn't fail with her game, and despite the 4/7 ratio on hardcourt, she has a reason to be optimistic.

Even though Lisicki hasn't been playing well this season, except for Wimbledon, she'll have her chances in this match. Errani struggled against players with weaker hits than Lisicki's, so it's clear both these players have their strengths and nuances should decide in the end.

Despite not recording a single note-worthy win on hard court this season, I'm convinced Lisicki is much closer to winning in this match than the Italian. She adjusted to the conditions in Stanford and that is one of her greatest advantages. Errani has not played since a clay surface tournament in Bad Gastein, which is at a higher elevation. In faster conditions, she failed to do as well as she did in Rome or Paris, and lost to Rogers convincingly. Rodgers is not a bad player, but she's no top player either. Sabine displayed a game that was not bad against Ana. She did well, moved well, and she lost mostly because of the mistakes she made following the second service. That will be a problem against Errani as well, but the first serve should be crucial. She will win quite a few points easily like that, and taking into consideration Erran's insecure game, the German will definitely take initiative and be the one deciding the outcome. I think she deserves the role of favorite and anything over 1.70 is worth a stake of middle value.
