Lleyton Hewitt - Julien Benneteau (1:6 2:6)

Hewitt has been doing better than the French player the last few months

  • Published:

The Australian lost to Raonic, who went on to win the tournament, last week in Washington, and before that won the title in Newport. Benneteau didn't win in almost two months and might lose his spot in the Top 50

Raonic won the title in Washington last week without losing a single set. Despite Sock being the one to serve for the second set, Hewitt was actually the player that put up the best fight against Raonic. The veteran had four break-points, while at the same time allowing only one. That, however, didn't help much in the tie-breaks, which Raonic did great all through the tournament, having won all 6 of them. Before that match, Hewitt beat his fellow countryman Matosevic. That was very important because Hewitt once again proved he's the boss of the Australian tennis, even though he admitted keeping that title is getting increasingly more difficult:

- Playing my fellow countrymen is much more difficult now than it used to be. The reason is, I've been helping a few of them in recent years. Matosevic was one of them, and he knew very well what to do against me. I won in the end and that makes me very happy.

The Australian moved to the Bahamas this season in order to shorten his trips to tournaments. His whole family adjusted for the sake of his carrier, even though it seemed the injuries would force him to retire a few years ago. But at 33, he's still a member of Top 50, and has even won two titles this season. After winning the title in Newport he celebrated like a player who's just beginning his carrier, and that only goes to prove how much the titles mean to him. Newport was particularly important after the two unfortunate defeats in finals there in the last couple of years:

- I felt a great deal of relief after that last point. This title is very important for me because I got very close the last two years. This is like a reward, or at least I feel it is.

Benneteau was in a uncharacteristic situation last week. One can say he got lucky with the draw, having been made seed after Dimitrov cancelled, which meant he got a first round bye. The problem is, he was supposed to meet Sela in the first round, a player he has a very positive head-to-head record with. But instead, Young was the first player he met. Unfortunately for Benneteau, Young was playing the best tennis this season in Washington and reached semi final.

Things aren't looking up for the Frenchman, especially since he hasn't won since Eastbourne (two months ago). He can find some comfort in the fact was doing his season's best on the American hard court, having reached Indian Wells quarter final and Miami third round. He got very close to losing his Top 50 status, and his game and form this year aren't very promising for the future. He's only a year younger than the Australian, and isn't really in his prime years either.
