Robby Ginepri - Alejandro Falla (6:4 6:2)

Isner: Ginepri is a great returner, that's what he does best

  • Published:

Falla didn't defend the Bogota final and got 20 places down the ATP table, but he doesn't have any big points to defend for the rest of the season. Ginepri passed the qualifiers here, and had two match-balls against Isner last week, and Isner later won Atlanta

Two weeks ago, Falla was a few places from coming to Top 50, a few places from the best ranking of his career. The Columbian is 30 years old, and is another example of a player who is in his best days and mature. Last year, his Bogota got a tournament and Alejandro got to the final. He lost to Karlovic then. He lost to a title winner again, but much earlier this time, in the second round. That's why he got 20 places down the ATP table.

- I didn't get a break till the end of the second set, which isn't normal for my tennis because I'm usually a good returner. I had a set ball, but no luck. The referee changed the line referee's decision, and it could have changed everything because I played better than when the match began. Unfortunately, that's tennis, and the only thing I can do now is train for the rest of the season - Falla said after his defeat against Tomic in Bogota. Tomic got the title later.

The good news for the Columbian is that he has no points to defend till the end of the season. Last year, he only had one ATP win between Bogota final and the end of the year. That leaves him room to improve. He currently has a negative ratio on the ATP level, but occasional challenger performances brought him lots of points.

Ginepri was the 15th world player nine years ago. Those days are long gone and won't be coming back. Robby is now a 31 year old and out of top 250. You could call it a survival. He has a few injuries behind him, including a complex elbow surgery four years ago. It's clear that the American isn't the player he used to be. All he has left is his will, and that's extremely strong, so that's why he's not giving up. These last weeks showed he still has something to show. He defeated Stakhovski in Atlanta, and then lost tightly to Isner.

- It'll be great if I catch a few wins in a row, but I take one day at a time and simply enjoy playing tennis - Ginepri said after defeating Stakhovski, and Isner praised him after he saved two tied match balls:

- Ginepri is a very good returner, and that's what he does best. Luckily, I scored two aces at the two match balls, so it couldn't be better. I had to serve the best I can because he returned really great.

The home veteran passed the qualifiers here. He played an unusual match against Diez, with 13 breaks. He got over 70% of points on the second service return. However, he left a better impression against the bomber Groth. Again, he returned well and realized three out of five break balls, while offering only one. He only played once against Falla. It was eight years ago, so that win bears no meaning in this context. Still, you can't ignore the fact that Ginepri's been playing well these two weeks, and Falla could have problems.
