Can Struff surprise the Spaniard?

Jan-Lennard put up a good performance in the first set and his opponent forfeited in the second. He lost to Verdasco last season in Bastad, bu the Spaniard is not in a too good form

Struff's win against Haider-Mauer was his third in a row. He opened the match in the right way, he dictated the tempo and won the first set very quickly, by getting a 6-2 result. Haider-Mauer had no answer to his powerful rallies and he Stuff's wide play didn't suit him. In addition, he tried to end the rallies as soon as possible and piled up plenty unforced errors.

Struff didn't give him a single chance on the serve. His serve was great but so was his return and it was only the first set that saved Haider-Mauer from an embarrassment. He managed to take his serve in the first game of the second set and Haider-Mauer decided there was no point continuing the match. Since this was the 13th match for him this month, it's clear fatigue played a vital role.

- It's very nice in Gstaaad. Yesterday, my opponent forfeited the match ad 6-2, 1-0. I wish him a speedy recovery. I played well and powerful until that point. I'm looking forward to my second chance against Verdasco - said Struff. 

On the other hand, Verdasco has been a bit disappointing in the last two matches. First Cuevas stopped him in Bastad semifinal and the Brown surprised him in the first match in Hamburg. It was then that Verdasco confirmed that he lacks confidence and that he's not at the right mental level. After winning the first set on account of his baseline consistency, Verdaco simply "vanished" in the second set.

He put up no resistance in the second set and the third one was decided by tie-break. Even though he won four points more, his double-fault at 8-8 in the tie-break decided the match as Brown used his match point after it and got the win. Verdasco used only 3 out of 10 break chances that he had and he continued playing poorly in crucial situations.

Even though Verdasco is the favorite here, Struff will have a chance. He has been very assured on his first serve and that could be enough to make this match unpredictable and to help him make us of a poor performance from Verdasco in the final stages.
