Tenis » Gstaad (M), Clay, 2nd Round
24.07.2014. 15:15 Finished
Viktor Troicki - Andrey Golubev (6:3 6:4)

Troicki got a surprise result in the first match

  • Published:

Even though his Gstaad wild card was in doubt, Viktor repaid the organizers in the first round. He managed to surprise young and talented Thiem and show he's completely ready

Viktor was able to beat Dominic Thiem in a very tight first-round match and got back to tennis the right way. After serving his suspension for not taking the doping test, Troicki went to Gstaad hoping he would get a wild card. He got it and won some points in the first round. Even though he had only a 47% first-serve efficiency, he did really well in longer rallies.

Not only that, Viktor was very good in crucial moments. Players who have been out for a while often have a problem converting their break chances and tie-breaks, but Viktor was surprisingly calm and patient. Thiem was unable to find a solution for his consistency and he said after the match that he was ashamed with his performance. Troicki used his opportunity to thank the organizers:

- I would like to thank the tournament for allowing me to get in the main draw and win my first points. It's really an incredible feeling to play tennis again. I was very nervous in the first round and I served pretty poorly, but I think I'll play better in the following matches.

On the other hand, Golubev managed to come back from being one set behind against Cervantes and beat him in the tie-break of the third set. As usual, Golubev had a poor start of the match and lost the first set. Cervantes dominated this part of the match and forced Andrey to move a lot, which meant for errors for him.

However, the turnaround occurred after the rain interrupted the match due to rain. Cervantes lost the power in his rallies and Golubev took the initiative and started dictating the tempo. He won the second set, took a one-break lead in the third and it all seemed over. But it wouldn't be a typical Golubev performance if he didn't put in some more drama so he lost his serve very quickly and saved 3 consecutive match points at 5-6 before winning the match in tie-break. Cervantes's poor efficiency in break chances was the reason Golubev won as Inigo used only 1 out of 10 break chances.

Even though Troicki has always been an unreliable player on the Tour, he's shown a better performance than Golubev in the first round. Just like Thiem, Golubev will look to take the initiative and go for faster rallies, but Troicki is consistent enough to make him get more mistakes.
