Juventus - Barcelona (3:0)

Barcelona's intro for Juventus couldn't have been worse

  • Published:

Barcelona were embarrassingly beaten by Malaga on Saturday in the championship

Juventus haven't been playing that great this season, but Allegri and his team look impressive in all the competitions so far. Juventus are six points ahead of the second-placed Roma in the national championship, they got placed to the Cup final last week, and now they are trying to make a step forward in Europe. On their way stands Barcelona, a team that stopped Juventus in the Champions League final two seasons ago. Considering that the Catalonian football giant are showing signs of weakness this season, everyone in Torino are dreaming about revenge. Besides, Juventus invested a lot of money last summer to bring new acquisitions, including Higuain, and those big stars didn't come to club just so Juventus could confirm that they dominate in Italy alone.

Allegri believes he knows Barcelona's strengths and weaknesses well:

- This is the tenth duel against Barcelona for me. I didn't play those games because I'm on the bench, but I've faced them. I've faced them eight times with Milano, once in the final with Juventus, and now we have two new games. These games will be different because final is a match that deserves a different approach. I believe we will have two balanced out games. We have to try to keep our net intact, but we also have to try and score a goal at home. It's important to keep this duel open because anything can happen in football. Barcelona are still a strong team because Messi, Suarez and Neymar are three players who guarantee scoring goals, and there are also Busquets and Iniesta who are one of the best midfielders in the world, in my opinion. Barcelona didn't change much since our final, but on the other hand, we have only two players who played then, Buffon and Bonucci. Barcelona have weaknesses in the defensive phase, and considering their offensive game, they leave a lot of room at the back. They're dangerous when in possession, so we have to be very balanced out and we have to stay in for 95 minutes.

Juventus played a routine match on Saturday and beat Chievo in the national championship. What's important for Allegri is that nobody got injured, so the only one he won't be able to use against Barcelona is the seriously injured Pjaca. Even though Juventus played the 3-5-2 formation great for years, Allegri is expected to use the 4-2-3-1 formation against Barcelona again, because that's what's been helping them be successful in the last months. The back Alex Sandro is dealing with some minor injury, and if he can't start, Asamoah will take his place from the first minute.

Barcelona's intro for Juventus couldn't have been worse. The Catalonians finally lived to see Real make a blunder, and when they were supposed to get evened out points-wise, a shock ensued. Barcelona played an away game against the weak, but always tricky Malaga, and lost 2-0. The cherry on top was that Neymar got sent off, and he'll miss the derby against Real Madrid because of the card he got.

After losing in Malaga, the Spanish press are careful about the mighty Juventus, and Luis Enrique Martinez agrees.

- When you look at Juventus' numbers, then you can only say they're spectacular. But regardless, we have our goal and know what we want. We respect Juventus, we know what kind of an opponent they are and we're aware that it's going to be hard, but I'm convinced we can get through.

Barcelona beat Juventus in the final two years ago:

- This is a similar, but again different Juve. A lot of their players left since, but they brought some new ones and they're again a team of the highest quality. It's hard for me to say whether they're stronger now or they were two years ago.

After losing the league game, there has been a lot of criticism, especially about Andre Gomes:

- I think we played well in Malaga and the result is completely unjustified. We were completely superior, and then they punished one mistake we made. I have to go back to Andre Gomes who got a lot of criticism from the press. It's pathetic to blame the loss to one individual like that. The team lost, not Andre! Either way, I think there's no reason to panic.

Gerard Pique and Ivan Rakitić weren't playing in Malaga because they were carded, but are back to the starting eleven today. The only big news is that Sergio Busquets is out because of the suspension. Rafinha, Aleix Vidal and Arda Turan are injured.
