Germany - England (1:0)

England won in the last year's friendly head-to-head in Berlin

  • Published:

Lukas Podolski to say goodbye to Germany's national team jersey in Dortmund

Matches between Germany and England are soccer classics, and this match which will be played in Dortmud will be their fifth head-to-head in the last ten years. At the 2010 World Championship Germany pulverized England, and in the remaining four friendlies both teams achieved two wins. Exactly a year ago in Berlin Kroos and Gomez recorded two goals of advantage for Germany after an hour of playing, but in the last half an hour Kane, Vardy and Dier turned the result over in favor of the away team.

Low spoke cautiously when talking about England:

- What you can really see is that England are a team in transition. Their manager has promised they want to play a more modern soccer, more possession-orientated. I watched a re-run of the game against Spain and that was a really strong performance. England have some fantastic individual players, very fast off the blocks, very pacey, prepared to take risks on the pitch.

The captain and first German goalkeeper Neuer and forward Kruse had to cancel the selector's invitation for the match against England, and it's interesting that Low didn't call 13 players who were in the roster at the last national team gathering. Those are defenders Gerhardt, Tah, Henrichs, Boateng and Ginter, midfielders Meyer, Gundogan, Kramer, Goretzka, and forwards Volland, Gotze, Reus and Gnarby. PSG's goalkeeper Trapp and RB Leipzig's yougn forward Timo Werner are still waiting for their debut in the national team jersey. This match will serve forward Podolski to say goodbye to the national team jersey.

After the shocking knock-out by Iceland in the round of 16 of the European Championship, the experienced selector Hodgson left England's bench, so young Southgate is leading them in the new qualification cycle. In four qualification matches under Southgate, England haven't allowed a single goal, and the only fail way the away draw with no goals against Slovenia. England confirmed their good shape in a recent friendly match against Spain which ended in a draw, even though Southgate's team had a two-goal advantage until the last minute of regular time.

On Sunday England are up for a qualification match against Lithuania, but before that Southgate is up for a match against Germany whom he doesn't recall pleasantly from his player days. Nineteen years ago, at the European Championship semi-finals, Southgate didn't record a penalty kick against Germany, which resulted in England being knocked out.

Out of players whom Southgate has called for the last friendly match versus Spain, we won't see goalkeeper Pickford, defenders Jones, Rose, Jagielka and Cresswell, midfielders Henderson, Walcott, Townsend and Wilshere, and forwards Rooney, Kane and Sturridge against Germany.

West Ham's midfielder Michail Antonio should have debuted for England's A team in this match, but he had to cancel due to injury struggles. Defender Keane from Burnle and midefielders Redmond and Ward-Prowse from Southampton are still awaiting for their debut. Interestingly enough, Southgate returned veteran Defoe among the national team players.
