Bayern Munich - Arsenal (5:1)

Bayern are a nightmare for Arsenal

  • Published:

Bayern have eliminated Arsenal from the Champions League Round of 16 three times already, including 2013 and 2014, but the club from London believe they will provide great resistance against the German champions, who have not been very convincing lately

Bayern have recorded 10 wins and a recent draw against Schalke in the last 11 games, but despite the wins, Ancelotti's team are being criticized for their unconvincing performances ahead of the game against Arsenal.

Bayern's defense does not appear nearly as convincing as in previous seasons, and the team is also having efficiency problems. After a tight win over Wolfsburg in the DFB Cup, Bayern defeated Ingolstadt 2-0 in the Championship, but the final result is misleading, they scored both goals in injury time.

In the past five years, Bayern have at least reached the Champions League quarter-final, and on their way eliminated Arsenal twice, so the fans expect their successful run to continue.

But their previous success against Arsenal does not mean much to coach Ancelotti.

- I don't think past is important. There won't be a mental barrier there, and if there is one, that means that they will want to move in a game against us. I have a lot of respect for Arsenal, they can play amazing football when they feel great on the pitch. We have to be able to make them feel uncomfortable. We are not playing just to avoid conceding - said Bayern's coach, Ancelotti, who knows that the away team are similar to them in football philosophy and that they are more offensively oriented.

- We want to play a good game, and our goal is to control the match. It is true that Arsenal are dangerous in counterattacks, they have amazing and fast players - said the home team's coach. Boateng and Ribery are still struggling with injuries, but these are old problems for Ancelotti.

It is expected that Robben, Thiago and Douglas Costa will start behind striker Lewandowski, which means that Muller, who has not been efficient, should be Ancelotti's ace from the bench.

London's Arsenal have been the unluckiest club in the Champions League knock-out stage draw for years now. Arsenal desperately wanted to win the top spot in the group, in order to face easier opponents in the Round of 16, but they were unlucky again by drawing Bayern.

This will be the 4th time in 12 years that they are facing the German champions, and in the past three head-to-heads, Bayern advance to the quarter-final.

In the past 6 years, Arsenal ended their Champions League spell in the Round of 16, Bayern eliminated them in 2013 and 2014, and last season they faced each other in the group stage.

Their last head-to-head, in Munich in November 2015 ended 5-1 for Bayern, who have 5 wins and 3 defeats in their 10 head-to-head games, and they played 2 draws.

The mental advantage is on Bayern's side, but Arsene Wenger's team definitely do have a chance. Bayern are not at the same level as in previous seasons, it is enough to look at their recent struggles in Bundesliga against Freiburg and Ingolstadt, and the away team are coming to the Allianz Arena hoping for an even match, and scoring at least one goal that would mean a lot for the return fixture.

After two heavy defeats in the Premiership to Watford and Chelsea, Arsenal managed to get things back to normal by defeating Hull on Saturday, and the good news for Wenger is that, except for Ramsey, Perez and Cazorla, there are no other injury problems.

- We have to forget about the past games against Bayern and focus on this one. We have the experience of playing against them in the past, and their goal is always to win this competition. We had some bad experiences against them, but I feel like we have a good chance this time. We already defeated them away, and it is important to record the best possible result ahead of the return fixture - said Arsene Wenger, who confirmed that reserve goalkeeper David Ospina will be on the goal instead of veteran Peter Cech.

- Ospina was great in the group stage and he deserves our trust to be on the goal in Munich. I expect Bayern to try and dominate as always, and have possession with the use of their speed in offense. We have to play a great game to get good chances for the return fixture - said Wenger and pointed out that he expects his key playmaker, Ozil, to wake up. he had a great start of the season, but nothing seemed to go his way in the past weeks (hasn't scored since December 10th).

- It is time for Ozil to score again. Maybe he will manage to regain his confidence, because he has been missing a lot of chances - said Wenger, who does not want them to pull back and only defend themselves at the Allianz Arena.

- We know that Bayern are the favorites and that we have a huge challenge ahead of us, but we have to defend well, be positive and engage in an open battle at their half of the pitch - said Wenger, who led 182 games in the Champions League, only Alex Ferguson has more, 190.
