Burnley - Sunderland (2:0)

Burnley doing great home, Sunderland in yet another crisis

  • Published:

Burnley recorded 4th straight home win on Saturday and now believe to confirm good form by reaching the next FA cup round against Sunderalnd, who are without about a dozen players and who need to focus on Premierleague

Burnley are a pretty amazing story this season in England. They keep on beating opponents home and have just two draws away.

One of those draws happened 10 days ago in FA Cup against Sunderland which is why they are playing a rematch today. If the regulation time today finishes as a draw, there will be extra time and a penalty shootout if necessary.

The controversial English midfielder Barton had a dream debut for Burnley at the age of 35. He got in 73 minutes into the game and scored the winning goal just 5 minutes later.

That was in the Southampton game, which turned out to be the 4th straight Premierleague win for Sean Dyche's team at this stadium, which will clearly be an advantage for them as they got into the Sunderland game.

- We played the first game in Sunderland well and created enough attempts. We'll try to do the same now but be more efficient - manager Dyche said. He will be without injured midfielders Arfield and Gudmundsson and some starters are probably to get a day off. Heaton isn't expected be on the goal, Nick Pope should be there instead.

- I already said that we have enough players and that allows us to make changes to the team, which was not the case earlier. I have a lot of trust for players who will be there. I hope the good run will continue - Dyche said. Burnley won just one out of the last 14 games in this competition when playing Premiership teams and lost 9.

Sunderland are dealing with increasingly bigger problems. They lost to Stoke 1-3 home on Saturday and are back in the bottom table spot with Swansea.

The only good news is the fact Hull and Crystal Palace have just a point more and everything can change in just one round. However, Moyes has to deal with bad game and injury struggles.

Club's top defender Kone, midfielder Ndong and forward Khazri are in Africa for the Cup of Nations. Goal keeper Pickford, midfielders Kirchhoff, Cattermore, Gooch and McNair and forward Watmore aren't there with injuries. Pienaar and Anichebe just recovered from injuries and might be there.

- We have a small choice of players at the moment but we have some young players who could develop. Some of them will get a chance in this game - Moyes said. His team struggles with creativity. Who knows what would have happened to them if Defoe wasn't there.

- We'll see who will get the start before the game. We'll do everything to get through. That would restore some of our confidence - Moyes said. For Sunderland, Premiership is a priority and getting knocked out here won't be considered a tragedy here.
