Real Madrid - Sevilla (3:0)

Real without Ronaldo

  • Published:

Sevilla are playing great with Sampaoli, but it's been a long time since Real have been beaten

Real Madrid ended the fall part of the season in the first place, three points ahead and one game played less than the second-placed Barcelona. The Kings easily got through in the Champions League, too, and they ended 2016 by winning the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan. They ended the year with style, and they're hoping to start 2017 the same way in this duel against Sevilla.

Zinedine Zidane holds Sevilla in high respect:

- They're a very competitive team that are also very confident under Sampaoli. We expect tough 90 minutes, but Sampaoli will say the same. I wouldn't make any predictions, all I know is that we're going to have a good match. Even though I respect Sevilla, I'm focused on my team first of all, and how to get them ready. We have some problems, but those are things you always have to deal with.

Zidane mentioned problems, and that definitely means Sergio Ramos and Pepe's injuries. But, the biggest handicap for Real is that Cristiano Ronaldo won't be playing. He isn't injured, Zidane just decided to spare him so he could rest. The forward Lucas Vazquez and the midfielder Mateo Kovačić got injured in the second half of December, and Gareth Bale is still out.

Sevilla changed their roster significantly last summer, and also replaced their old coach. But, Jorge Sampaoli is doing a great job. He helped Sevilla end the fall part of the season third, with only one point behind Barcelona. He also got to the knock-out phase of the Champions League, and was very convincing in the Cup, as well.

- I'd rather avoid starting the year by playing against Real Madrid, but it is what it is. They've had a great half-season, they haven't been defeated in a long time, they're consistently playing great, and we're aware of the task ahead. Besides the two cup duels, we'll also play each other in the championship, and those three games could exhaust us both mentally and physically. However, we're convinced that we can deal with Real. Our goal is to play high pressing, keep the ball in our possession as much as possible and try to push Real away from our goal as far as possible - the guest coach Jorge Sampaoli announced the three games against Real.

Sampaoli won't be able to rely on the midfielder Franco Vazquez who's been suspended for three games ever since the Italian cup. The Argentinian did two games against the lower-league Formentera, and the third one will be this one. Sampaoli still hasn't decided who'll replace Vazquez in the starting eleven, but Ben Yedder, Sarabia and Iborra are all great alternatives. Benoit Tremoulinas, Gabriel Mercado, Sergio Escudeo and Michael Krohn-Dehli healed their injuries during the break, more or less, and joined the practices, but most likely, Sampaoli won't risk them and push them into the game right away.
