A clash between Sociedad and Villarreal guarantees a close match

Both teams did a very good first part of the season and currently have the same number of points as they race for the Champions League

Real Socieded opened the season with great expectations but things haven't gone great at the start. However, the Basque side got into a good run mid-season and managed to finish 2016 in spot 5, with the same number of points as Villarreal in spot 4 and ahead of great teams like Atletico and Athletic. They want to reach Europe through championship and the Cup is definitely a good chance for that. 

- We are starting the new year but the goals are the same as they were before. Our goal is to stay in good form and to keep the good run going. We have a number of important and tough games in January and that is why it would be ideal  to start off with a good result against tough opponents. We all have great expectations from the Cup and we won't take this competition lightly. We have worked hard when preparing for Villarreal and we hope to leave a mark in the Cup. We do know it won't be easy, though - midfielder Pardo said.

Forward Vela and midfielder Zurutuza recovered from injuries and will be on the team today. The forward Agirretxe is out, just like defender Martinez. Midfielder Bergara was expected to be back as well but his comeback will wait for at least another month. Esteban Granero has been out with an injury from before.

Villarreal have not had a spectacular season but they did things as expected. Villarreal reached the knock-out stage in Europa League, while sitting in spot four in the championship, which guarantees them a spot in Champions League. They've also had success in the Cup, which was never been a priority for them.

- A short break did us well and we cannot wait for the season to continue. We did some great things in the first part of the season but the real tests are ahead. For starters, there is the Sociedad game. They are close to us when it comes to quality and we expect a very close 180 minutes. We worked on some details the last few days as well as on some mistakes which could be deadly against Real. We need to control the ball better when in possession and improve efficiency. If we manage to do that, we can hope to go through in the Cup - the visitors' defend Gaspar said.

The visitors will be without two important starters, team captain and midfielder Soriano and center back Ruiz. They got injured recently and might not even be there for the meeting with Barcelona on Sunday. Forward Bakambu and winger Cerisev are out as well. Soldado got injured in August and won't be back for another two months at least.
