A game for the top spot in the group

The defenses should be dominant here and the winner decided by the smallest details. Spain still have quite a lot of room to grow, but Slovenia can do better as well

This is an expected clash for the top spot. In Round of 16, the winner will face opponents who finished in spot 4 in Group A, while who ever loses this will face a team that came in third. Brazil and Russia will meet at 2 to decide how things will unravel in that group, allowing Spain and Slovenia to know exactly what a win will get them. 

Spain played yet another unconvincing game yesterday, this time against Macedonia. The opponents said they will rest top players if Spain controls the game but the Spaniards failed to do that up until the last 10 minutes. Macedonia played great 7-on-6 to cause Spain big problems. Lazarov did a great job, Macedonia were breathing down Spain's neck for 50 minutes. De Vargas then started doing brilliantly, not allowing Macedonia to score for 6 minutes. His team took a 6-goal lead but the final result is really nor realistic. The same happened in the Tunisia and Iceland game - Spain took advantage of the opponents declining in the final part of the games. Sadly for them, that won't help them much against top opponents. 

- They couldn't keep up with our pace in the second half. Rotations allow us to keep it up the entire game. We knew there will be problems for us against their 7-on-6 game. We had problems until we got aggressive in defense - Ribera said after the game.

Indeed, their pace is causing problems for the opponents but that won't mean much against Slovenia because Vujovic has a good choice of players and a pretty well-rested team. 

Entrerrios was back to play 15 minutes and score no goals. But he did record three assists. His more important roles are to come and the Spaniards will need them, just like Canellas, who did badly yesterday. Rivera played a brilliant game (11 goals) and Dusebajev had a more prominent role (5 goals). The latter will be important for the Spanish offense. 

In spite of everything, the Spaniards seem to have quite a lot of room to grow. 

Slovenia played an amazing game against Tunisia two days ago. It was obvious they won't have it easy from the start. Tunisia even took a lead early in the second half, while Slovenia made mistakes, played bad offense and struggled to score. Tunisia scored a few easy goals to get ahead and seemed to have settled the game. It was 28-23 with 6 minutes left on the clock but Slovenia then went on a 5-0 run thanks to Tunisia's mistakes. Janc scored in the final seconds to get his team a valuable point.

- There were too many mistakes but we did make a comeback and displayed certain level of quality - Slovenia's top scorer Kavticnik said.

Bezjak, who was quite reliable, played a very bad game but Zarabec finished with 4 goals and 4 assists. Vujovic was experimenting again. He have Kastelic 40 minutes on the goal and he failed him. Skok was among the players who created the comeback. 

- This was a lesson for us. I would like to say I'm happy we gave Macedonia a push into the next stage but this is like a defeat for me and a cause for concern. We need to be at top level for the next game - Vujovic said.

Slovenia are turning to Spain now. They are convincing they can win and say that defense will be the crucial segment. If they are at top level, they can cause a lot of problems for Spain but if they make mistakes like against Tunisia, Spain will have many fastbreaks. They need new solutions in offense because they cannot get past the Spanish 6-0 defense. 

Spain probably still remember the defeat to Slovenia in the qualifiers for the Olympics. The defenses played the key role in those games, just like at European Championship in Poland a year ago when they played a draw.
