Houston - New Orleans (117:107)

The Pelicans still believe in the playoff

  • Published:

Basketball Reference website gives only 1.3% chance for the Pelicans to get to the playoff, which is probably realistic since they're only the 11th team and four wins behind the Nuggets

Unless something epic happens, Houston Rockets will get to the playoff placed third, which is a big deal, but unlike their competitors (Jazz, Clippers), they didn't struggle with injuries as much. They'll play the last 11 games within the next 19 days, and they also have to play two back-to-backs till the end of the season, so a hole in the schedule that allowed them to rest since Monday was welcomed. On Monday, they beat the Nuggets at home, 125-124.

- It's good that we got a small break before the final part of the season. We need it because we can work on some things. This is not a job. Playing is fun. We can consider ourselves privileged to be able to do this job - Eric Gordon said.

If anyone needed a break, it's James Harden who's at the top of the league when it comes to minutes played, but that can only help in the race for the title of the MVP of the league. The Rockets' best player is currently averaging at 29.4 points, 8.1 rebounds and 11.2 assists.

- This is my time to rest. I need to take care of my body and get ready for Friday - Harden said. His average in the last three games is 40.0 points, 10.3 rebounds and 10.7 assists.

Since the All-Star break, the Rockets got the best offensive ranking (115.6), but they're only the 18th team when it comes to the defensive ranking (106.7), which is partly due to Lou Williams - since he came in the last 13 games, they've really struggled with rebound control.

- We've got a certain weakness, but we can mask it if we fight. That's enough. We can play small post, but if we fight, we're not that small - the coach Mike D'Antoni believes. His team's score at home is 26-9.

It's going to be interesting to see how the Rockets mask their rebound problem tonight since they're hosting the New Orleans Pelicans who got only 1.3% chance to get to the playoff by the Basketball Reference website. That's probably a realistic number because they're the 11th team, and are four wins behind the Nuggets.

Alvin Gentry's guys can only feel optimistic because of a 3-game winning run that improved their score to 7-7 since DeMarcus Cousins joined them. Also, the Pelicans will have to play the Nuggets three times till the end of the season, and Mavs and Blazers once each, so it's really all up to them.

- We're taking it a game at a time. It's in the back of our minds. Everybody wants to make that playoff push; we still believe we can. We still have time. It's in the back of our minds. But at the same time, we know this is a process. This is a period of time for us to get used to each other, build a chemistry, and we're all looking forward to the future said Cousins, who is averaging 21.9 points and 12.2 rebounds with New Orleans.

The Pelicans lost two out of three duels against the Texans, but they could feel encouraged by the fact that they won their last duel played last week, when they won 128-112 at home.
