Baskonia - Panathinaikos (63:72)

Bourousis and James are back

  • Published:

Panathinaikos' center and point guard were the key in Baskonia last year, and they'll definitely be motivated today, besides for the fight for the fourth place

The way Baskonia marched through Bambert was so convincing - they crushed the defending German champion by 25 points two days ago. Baskonia players were incredible, and you really can't find them a fault. Brose weren't even that bad, it was just that Baskonia were in the zone. Even the coach Alonso was impressed:

- When we're playing like this, we can beat anyone in Europe. We were stopping it in a great way, Larkin took everything on himself in the offense. The most important thing to me is that we showed a level of defense this high and this win is crucial for us even though there are still three games left till the end.

The schedule is very favorable in that regard (PAO and Zalgiris at home, Galatasaray on the road), and they could easily get the fourth place since Fenerbahce are only a win away. The fourth place would mean the home floor advantage in the quarterfinal, and that would mean a lot to Baskonia.

This match against Panathinaikos was supposed to be a fight to confirm the playoff, but the way other duels ended, this became the fight for the fourth place, so naturally, PAO have ambitions of their own.

- This is going to be a great game because the stakes are big for both teams. With Gist back, Panathinaikos got new energy, and there are our two former players, James and Bourousis who will be very motivated so we have to keep an eye on them - Alonso believes.

Mike James will duel Shane Larkin as the point guard, so that will be something to watch out for. James won that duel in the first match in Athens because he finished with 16 points, and Larkin was indisposed, hitting only six points. Bourousis will wrestle Voigtmann in the paint because Bargnani's back are still injured. Bourousis was shut down in Athens, with only three points and 0/5 shots.

That's going to be an important goal for Baskonia today because a lot is based on the battle in the paint. PAO won the first match 69-86, and Baskonia won the rebounds (44-28), but they lost 19 balls and hit only two three-pointers, so that's definitely not their style which they used to dominate in Germany two days ago.

Panathinaikos' defense deserves credit in that, they're the third best in Euroleague, and with Gist back, it got even more quality. They demonstrated that force against Milano two days ago. Milano's offense looked sterile and they couldn't find a solution for the Greeks defense. The coach Xavi Pascual still wasn't too pleased:

- Obviously our offense wasn't up to it. I don't even know how many slam dunks we missed, and counter attacks. Also, we didn't score open shots. After an offensive game like that, you always feel like you played badly, even though the result shows otherwise.

In that match, Calathes' 13 points and four assists definitely stand out. He was in a bit of a crisis, but he played the last two matches great, and that's definitely good news for PAO. The problem was the rebounds, which was unexpected with Bourousis, Singleton, Gist and Gabriel in the paint. Panathinaikos are the second worst team of the Euroleague when it comes to the opponents' rebounds, and the coach Pascual will definitely look for more focus there today because he can't allow Baskonia to beat them in the rebounds again.

- Baskonia are playing great at home. They keep looking for a chance for a counter attack, so we're going to have to be very focused, control the rebounds and take care of the defensive transition.

Panathinaikos' biggest problem this season are the road games. Their Euroleague score is 3-10, even though they were pretty evened out against CSKA, Real, Efes, Unics... Everything depends on controlling the rhythm today because Panathinaikos have to slow things down to have a chance at one of the toughest road games in Europe.
