Seeley out due to injury, Smith is back

Lithuanians still have certain chances for the playoffs, but after the defeat at home to Efes their chances are minimal. They won three out of last four away games

Even though they're decimated and without motive because they don't have a chance for the playoffs for a long tie now, Maccabi have been showing character and they've been very serious with the way they play. They won in the last two out of three. In the last round as complete outsiders they won against Fener in Istanbul when Landesberg's shot went into the basket in the last second.

- I think this means a lot for us, we're becoming stronger with such wins. We played as a team - said coach Bagatskis, and we have to mention that before that match they pulverized Hapoel in a big city derby.

They outplayed the Turks in the rebound, which is proof enough how feisty they are and how well they play. Simpson was great with 14 recorded points, 12 rebounds and five turnovers. He was originally brought to Maccabi to stay until the end of Euroleague to serve as help for injuries and absences. But, he proved himself here. Miller and Goudelock have been out since earlier. Landesberg ended with 22 recorded points, Joe Alexander with 13.

- Our game is different when Simpson and Alexander are out there together. They're athletically powerful, very strong - said Maccabi's coach who confirmed that Seeley will be out for a few weeks due to a foot injury.

Smith was resting against Fener, today he'll play. Goudelock and Miller are out, as was mentioned earlier.

- Physically we're a bit stronger, but at the same time we're slower. But, we control the rebound better and that lets us control the rhythm - Bagatskis pointed out.

Finally Maccabi's atmosphere is more positive, and even though they're decimated, we should expect them to play great,

- Zalgiris are very aggressive, they know how to play, how to attack the basket, and they're especially dangerous because they're after the playoffs. We're very thin at defense positions, but we have to play with what we've got. Fener have a wider bench, but we play well - said Bagatskis.

The Lithuanians' mental state is questionable. They played one of the most important games of the season against Efes. They had a chance to come one win away from the playoff-zone. However, they recorded only 24 points in the second half, and they didn't stand a chance. The numbers clearly show that: 19-for-41 two-pointers, 7-for-20 three-pointers, 9-for-16 free throws. It's not easy to play such games.

- We believe we can still make it to the playoffs and we'll continue to fight - said Jasikevicius.

The chances are minimal, almost unimportant. Three rounds before the end they have three wins less than Efes and Zvezda, the dueo who are among the Top Eight. Efes have a very tough fixture (Fener, Oly, and Real), so there's still room for hope.

They definitely have to win in the three games against Maccabi, Milan and Baskonia.

- Our goal for today is to win, that's why we were good this season because we see every game individually. The situation doesn't favor us, we need others to lose, but that's not something we can control - said Jasikevicius.

- Maccabi left a great impression against Fener. They played differently from what we studied. It's going to be interesting to see how they will play today.

This season Maccabi changed a lot of things. They changed coaches, numerous players, they changed the pace. Bagatskis made them into a run-and-gun team, but as he lost the biggest stars (Weems, Miller, Zirbes, Goudelock, and now Seeley), he had to adjust. He said himself that his team is slower now, but they're smarter and have better control of the rebound. As all of the best shots are injured now, players like Landesberg, Simpson, Ohayon and Alexander took over, and they're offensively a different league. When we take a look at Maccabi's home Euroleague games, we can see that they went over this margin in five out of 13 games, but only the game against Fener is important for this game in which they recorded 87 points next to Zirbes, Weems and Seeley. I won't count in Milano and Galatasaray from the start of the season because they're not playing any kind of defense. Baskonia are very fast, and Darussafaka allow over 80 points in away games. In all of those games key players were Goudelock, Weems, Miller, Zirbes or Seeley. Today all of them are out, and Maccabi have to offensively rely on what they have available, but it's nothing close to the original. On the other hand, we have Zalgiris who still have a minimum chance to make it to the playoffs, and for that they have to win today. In the second half of the season Jasikevicius did a great job with lining them up, and they're especially good in away games. They left six out of nine of their opponents in an under on this margin, and they went over against the mighty Real, Galatasaray who recorded 11 three-pointers, and to Brose who are at home a lot faster than in road games. What's the most important today is the matchup. Maccabi are now a team with no speed and transition, and they're focused on position basketball in which they dominated with the rebound in the last few games. That's impossible to do against Zalgiris because no teams in Euroleague don't allow their opponents less rebounds than Zalgiris. Without the rebound Maccabi will be in problems because they're doomed today to players like Ohayon, Mekel and Pnini, and such a team Zalgiris will easily leave under 80 points.
