Bayern Munich - Unicaja Malaga (72:69)

Only a win would leave Unicaja in the fight for the first place

  • Published:

The Spaniards are coming after beating Barcelona despite being down by four 19 seconds before the end. That was their fourth win in a row. Bayern left them with 62 points in their first duel

The Germans have 4-2, the Spaniards 3-2, their first duel in Malaga was won by Bayern 74-62 and if they can do it again, they will probably secure one of the first two places in the group, and could have a chance for the first place which will be decided in St Petersburg against Zenit.

Đorđević did the right thing by bringing the new backcourt player Nick Johnson, and trusting him with the offense control. The American, more of a scorer-point guard than a true point guard brought his team a win in Murcia last week. The score was 75-75 in the last five minutes, then Bayern had a 11-0 series, that is, 20-5. Johnson hit all of his 16 points in the last eight minutes, and he's expected to play an even more active role in the rest of the season.

Đorđević let Renfroe in Barcelona this week, and Gavel will now probably take on more of the point guard duties, while Johnson will be the main back, even though the Serbian coach likes to use Redding as two, since they brought Lučić for three. Redding played the three most of the last season.

It was Gavel and Redding that started the back positions against Hagen during the weekend, and after the bad first part, Bayern got up by 20 in the second half, winning it 97-77 in the end.

- We wanted to win those two games this week, and we did it. Of course, we didn't use up all our strength, but we deserved to win and it was an important one - Đedović said.

After coming back to Munchen, Johnson got sick. He even went to hospital, just in case. He didn't practice on Monday, but according to all the announcements, he'll definitely be playing today.

They lost the first period to Unicaja in Malaga, 22-10, but then allowed 12, 14 and 14 points in the following three, allowing them only 62 total, and easily winning with 43% two-pointer shots and 18% three-pointer shots by the Spanish. That was one of the best defensive matches Bayern played this season, next to allowing 44 to Budućnost in Podgorica.

- After two tough road games, I'm really looking forward to playing in front of our fans. It doesn't matter that we didn't go through. We want to give a great performance for our fans and to get a win - Đorđević said.

Unicaja came to Germany with a great four-games winning streak that conquered Zenit, Bilbao, Budućnost and Barcelona. They won what was a lost game against Barcelona during the weekend. They were losing 76-73 19 seconds before the buzzer, with the shots by Claver. He hit one (+4). Fogg reduced it by two points difference, 7 seconds before the buzzer and Perperoglu hit only one (78-75) but then the referees called a foul on Fogg by Rice with the buzzer, during the three-pointer shot. The American was hot that day, hitting all three throws, finishing with 29 points and leading Unicaja to a big win in the overtime.

They're coming here in a good moor, with their form rising, team basically complete with only Nedović missing, but he's been out for a while. Bayern are a strong team physically, good in rebounds, and that's the battle Unicaja lost in their first duel. When Plaza's team lose the rebounds, they rarely win the game. They'll definitely try to perform better there.

- That's a team you can't let your guard down against for a second. They jump right on to it. I've seen the video from the first game, we started well, but then let our guard down and we deserved to lose - Plaza commented before the return fixture.

- That's a team with the aggressiveness that is transmitted by their coach, with a strong rebound. To win here, we need the best version of ourselves.

If this was in one of the previous seasons, with Pešić on Bayern's bench and Unicaja in their Euroleague form, Unicaja having 79.5 margin might have made sense. Not like this.
Bayern are better defensively now, Đorđević brought much more aggressiveness, and Redding as two and Lučić as three benefits them and they're using it. They reduced this same Unicaja in Malaga at 62 points, after allowing 22 in the first period, they didn't allow over 14 in the next three.
Bayern allowed 80 or more points in four of 16 official games this season, twice to Zenit, which is irrelevant here, and once in their debacle against Bamberg, again irrelevant, and once home to Murcia, which is totally irrelevant because it happened after they were up by 20 in three periods, and then they relaxed, allowing Murcia 31 in the last period.
Unicaja are coming after hitting 95 against Barcelona, 93 against Budućnost, 85 against Bilbao, and 93 against Zenit. That's why this margin. All irrelevant, and here's why - they played overtime against Barcelona, without it it was 78 (7 in the last minute). Budućnost don't stand a chance and are just doing the job in the group, Bilbao aren't that great defensively so the match fell apart, and with Zenit they were just hitting it. And all four were home matches. In the last three road games, Unicaja hit 79 against Joventut, 75 against Murcia, and 73 against Canarias, so those numbers are more of a measure. Before that, they played road games against the defensively oriented Real and Fuenlabrada, and Budućnost, who can't match anyone in this group, so those matches aren't relevant for this matchup.
