Real struggling with injuries and weaker form

Both teams were eliminated from the Cup this week, but they still have things to play for in the championship

RCD Espanyol

Madrid managed to end their two game losing run and with difficulties defeat Malaga secured their spot at the top. However, this week cannot be characterized as good in Madrid. They played only 2-2 in the Copa del Rey quarter-final return fixture at Vigo, which got them eliminated. Fans are getting more and more unhappy with their performances, but they are still a team that until recently set records with their long undefeated run, so we definitely shouldn't write them off. 

Things aren't all bad for Zinedine Zidane:

- Half of the championship is behind us and we are at the top and I think that the impression we left is positive. We are still in play in the championship and Champions League and that is a big deal. We will now face Sociedad, who were also eliminated from the Cup, but I don't think they were affected by that. They are a quality team fighting for the Champions League and they will do everything in Madrid to maximally complicate our life. However, a lot will depend on us today. 

Zidane lost Marcelo and Modric in the previous round, and they will not be on the roster today either, after missing the CUp game. Raphael Varane has not completely recovered, but considering all the problems Zidane is facing, he will probably start in defense today. Bale, Pepe, Dani Carvajal and James Rodriguez have been injured for a while.

After a home defeat to Barcelona, Sociedad were aware that their Cup adventure came to an end so they focused on the championship. Last weekend they won 1-0 against Celte who were saving energy for the Cup, and with that win they are even with Atletico Madrid at the 4th position, and their dreams of Champions League are still alive. 

Eusebio Sacristan is not fooled by Real's latest poor performances: 

- Madrid are a team that always deserve a lot of respect. Yes, they did not play very well in some latest games, but look at their season as a whole. I think they are playing an impressive season in which they had a long undefeated run and one or two weaker performances won't fool us. They are still the team that until recently demolished everything in their path. Despite all this respect, we will not give up, and we hope we will get a chance to cause an upset. We have shown in the past that we can play against the best teams, even though we may not have recorded our best results. We will try to leave our heart out there today, play our game and whatever happens. 

Sociedad's key midfielder Illarramendi served his suspension and he will be back today, while Berciche is out for the same reason. Hector Hernandez will replace him, a player we rarely see in the starting lineup. Right back Joseba Zaldua has recovered and he will start today, so Eusobio still cannot count only on injured Carlos Martinez, Markel Bergara and Imanolo Agirretxe.
