Lyon - Marseille (3:1)

Both teams are seeking redemption for the defeats in the last round

  • Published:

Lyon unexpectedly slipped in an away game against Caen, while Marseille were pulverized in the derby against Monaco

Lyon should know well how uncomfortable Caen can be at home, but the Lions came to Normandy in excellent shape and they hoped to continue the fight for the very top. The hosts shocked the Lions early and recorded two goals, and even though Lyon managed to score a draw later, Ivan Santini put the final nail into the coffin by recording his second goal. Lyon thus fell back a bit from the leading trio, but considering they have one less match and Nice's bad games, they can still hope to make it to the Champions League.

Bruno Genesio didn't despair after the defeat:

- We didn't count on the defeat in Caen, but what's done is done, we have to forget it as soon as possible and turn to the derby against Marseille. We're still at the top and nothing's lost. Our wish was to strengthen in the offense and that's why we signed with Memphis Depay this week, a great talented player whom we're counting on today. I'm not sure if he'll be playing from the first minute or if I'll toss him into the fire at all, but his arrival is a big plus for Lyon.

The Argentinian defender Emmanuel Mammana recovered from his injury and started practicing, but it's too early for him to come back. Except for the Argentinian, Genesio today can't count on stopper Mouctar Dikhaby who injured against Caen. Nicolas N'Koulou and Rachid Ghezzal are at Africa Cup of Nations.

Rudi Garcia transformed Marseille with his arrival. He brought them to European positions, but the real test came last week against Monaco. Olympique didn't pass the test in the end, but at no point were they even close to succeed against Monaco. The away team pulverized them with 4-1, and Marseille can only seek comfort in today's derby.

After being defeated in one derby, Rudi Garcia is careful in announcing the second one:

- After our last defeat, everyone knows that Lyon are the favorites for a reason. We expected more from the game against Monaco, but we missed our chance, while Monaco recorded goals. Now we have to get done everything that's in our power to play more seriously. One defeat is no tragedy, but if we lose today, panic could creep into the locker room, and that's never good.

Marseille brought the great midfielder Morgan Sandon this week from Montpellier, but we probably won't see him today. Considering that Garcia has no news about other absences, it's expected he will bring out a similar line-up to the one from last round. Abou Diaby, Henri Bedimo and Tomaš Hubočan have been injured from before, while Clinton N'Jie is at Africa Cup of Nations.
