    Balingen have a respectable team, worth more than their ranking. Their latest results should be viewed having in mind the fact four of five were played away, while they're a different team at home, much tougher, stronger and more confident. They lost only three of 11 played at home, with this game against Gummersbach and the next against Bergischer marked as must-win matches or they'll have problems avoiding relegation. They're in no way weaker than Gummersbach, realistically speaking. Up to recently they had a weaker goalie, but the arrival of Fazekas changed that. Their perimeter lineup with Strobel, Nyokas, Bohm and Vasilakis beats the one Gummersbach have, and the away team may have stronger wingers, but Santos and von Gruchalla make their mark in counterattacks and agaisnt opponents who give them a chance with a weak, mistake making offense. Balingen will not allow that, as they've got plenty of experience and play slightly longer possessions. Gummersbach managed to get just a single point in this arena over the last five seasons, and I don't think thy'll do much better today. They're stagnating, having lost their last three away matches against Erlangen, Magdeburg and Bietgheim, while Balingen are a stronger team that the new-to-the-league Erlangen and Bietigheim. Details

    The stats are not backing my decision here because Creteil's defense improved a lot since the new coach took over. Also, the results are a direct consequence of the rivals they met. The last home game was a win over the decimated Selestat in the Cup (28-18) and that means nothing. Before that, they beat Toulouse 31-28, the game against Istres last week finished with 56 goals even though the score was 8-1 14 minutes into the game. They are now to meet Aix, with whom they played a strange first game. They had the 18-16 lead at half-time and then scored only 8 in the second half. Aix area fast team, as their coach demands. They scored 33 goals in the Tremblay game last week and nave an under only against Toulouse (27-27) and the tough Dunkerque in the last 8. Toulouse didn't score the last 5 minutes of that game. They are to face a young team that likes to run and since Aix have no problem with it either, I don't think this will end with less than 55 goals. Details

    One can expect Skive to be emotionally relieved after the big victory against Copenhagen which saved them from being directly relegated from the league, and that they'll be able to play a relaxed game with no imperative to win. Under such circumstances Skive play offensively focused handball, producing high scores but lots of 'gift' goals for their opponents as well, which influenced them having the highest average of goals allowed in the league (29.5 per game). Ringkobing are ranked right above Skive in number of goals allowed as second worst, and with the exception of the match against Nykobing which directly decided their relegation, their last five matches ended above the 50 goals margin. Both teams have very important qualification matches coming up, playing to stay in the league against teams from Division 1, so we can expect players to avoid getting injured, and thus a slightly more relaxed defense in a match whose outcome is already irrelevant.     Going over this match-up in my head I could not imagine Vekić being this much of an underdog. Personally, I expected the odds to be the other way around. Vekić may be on a bad series, but every series ends somewhere. She has not won for a while in the main draw, that's true, but I believe she will here. Chirico got through the qualifications in Acapulco, beat Urszula during her good run and got into her first WTA match ever. This means she cannot be favored against Vekić, regardless of how poorly Vekić played. A week later Chirico proved she cannot put together several good performances, the crushing defeat against Kania was no accident. I saw the briefs of her matches, the two she played at Midland earlier this year. Her serve is nothing much and can certainly be played against, and she had a noticeably low first serve percentage. She makes an awful lot of mistakes in rallies, being too eager wears her down too early. Vekić was present at the draw, and certainly can't complain about it. A month's break will have had a very positive effect on her, as will working with Evert and advice from Ivaničević who was in Florida. Vekić is worth far more than her past results. Details

    Novikov is the player I got to know very well at challenger level. He is still underappreciated even though he's a great player. Of course, he is prone to slips, which is keeping him out of top 200 but there's no doubt about him finishing it in this season. More importantly, he does his best against the better players. He beat Harrison, won a set against Estrella at the last tournament. He played a great match against Donaldson in Maui too and beat the favorite Bedene here in the first round. He could have won the first set but lost it in the end. He should have settled things in the second one before the tie-break as he had break-point opportunities in a couple of games and a set point before the tie-break. Novikov left a very good impression on me to eventually win the match even though Bedene had the perfect chance to punish him for all the missed opportunities. Even though this surface suits clay-specialists more than any other hard court, that is not the reason for this bet. Gimeno-Traver was close to losing the first set to Jung. Jason served for the set and he is not set to meet the better-quality Novikov who just got a boost of confidence. Dennis is much more dangerous than Jung and Gimeno proved he's not invincible. Honestly, I think the Spaniard won't win this easily. He could end up under pressure and I wouldn't be surprised if Novikov even wins. It would be less surprising than an easy win for Gimeno. Details

    Krka really need this victory, and one can hardly expect the stagnating Maribor team to parry them properly in a close game. Maribor have not imperative to win here, and said their mind is already on avoiding relegation. The away team do have 5-6 professionals in their team, but the rest are all junior players and they can hardly keep up here. The weekend game of Maribor against Hops showed how short their bench is, as they went under in the second half and allowed over 100 points. Krka should have this in the bag early, and I doubt they'll insist on full throttle defense in the rest of the match. They've got a much more important ABA league match on weekend to think about, and I believe we might see a more relaxed second half. The handicap is an option, but Krka haven't showed they care for blowout games against weaker opponents in the national league. Details
