Lihuania have not been brilliant so far but they have been winning pretty convincingly, which is a mark of great teams. After some strange results yesterday, this game became very important. Lithuania have no time to relax as they are playing to carry over the points into the next round, while this game means either getting the points or getting through. Things will be much clearer when Latvia and Hungary end their game, as Latvia's game would take the pressure away and secure UK's place in the following round. But despite of their good performance against Greece yesterday, that performance won't work against Lithuanian. They held the zone against Greece for almost 40 minutes and they attacked terribly, almost completely focusing on three-pointers (11/36) and that won't work against Lithuania. UK had four players with over 30 minutes of playing time as their rotation is very narrow and this has to be felt. For instance, only 1 Lithuanian player had over 28 minutes. Hungary beat UK by 9, and lost against Lithuania by 14. In my opinion, Lithuania in their best mood are better than UK by 20 points and I expect something like that here. Details

Even though this is a fight for the ninth place, the last matches confirmed that Norway are definitely a team that deserve a higher placement. They were eliminated before the quarterfinals because of the defeats against Korea and Germany, who are among the top four teams in this competition, but perhaps the key defeat was the one against Croatia. It staggered Norway after the great start they had, and ended their rhythm. Norwegian coach confirmed his players are really motivated, and we can see how much from the matches against Slovenia and Serbia. They're respectable teams, and Norway crushed them in the way neither Russia nor Denmark could, by 14, even though Norway missed six counterattacks and could have celebrated even more convincingly. Even three goals difference will be enough against Croatia, who secured their placement among the top ten, and even though they shouldn't lack motivation in front of Croatian audience, I'm pretty convinced Norway will be more motivated. Croatia can't repeat the match they played in the group. Then, the defense were brilliant, lead by two fantastic goalies, and Gabrijela Besen played the match of her life. 11 saves out of 15 shots in 27 minutes on the court, without conceding one goal in the last 14 minutes. Norway had about 32% realization, by far the least in this championship. They faced tough Serbia's defense, a similar team in concept, also a bit slow like the Croatian one, and they solved that convincingly. They're undoubtedly better than Croatia, and I believe they'll confirm that in a normal match. Details

German discipline, spirit, aggressiveness, and engagement are never questionable, but what is questionable is their quality level. Akpinar is their point guard, basically the only player with more experience in handling the ball, the rest is strength, physicality and athleticism, more or less. Serbia can not only match them in that, but also crush them. When they played the preliminary tournament in Turkey, Serbia won by 11, with only one real quarter (coach Mijatovic: We managed to crush their resistance with only three minutes of really playing in the third period). Today, they need the win to get the max four points to the next round, and I expect them to give 100% in all 40 minutes, which wasn't the case against Sweden yesterday, for example, because that match didn't mean anything to them. Main players got some rest last night so fatigue won't bother them, either, but fatigue will bother Germany who just had a big fight against the Slovenians. Details

It's hard to find something after three games that Latvia have done better than Hungary. One should look very hard to find the stats but Hungary have left a much better overall impression so far. Latvia have a better front court but Bognar, Molnar and Török have done a very good job in the paint for Hungary, as reflected in the fact that they have only 2 rebounds less than Latvia on average. Hungary's advantage is definitely their strong defense. It's very hard to play against them, they're physically strong and they make use of that, even though the refs don't allow too much. The second important factor for this is the backcourt of both teams. Latvia don't have the real leader on the court, while Hungary already have that in Benedek Varadi and Zoltan Perl (point guard). These two players carry Hungary and they're definitely capable of making the difference. In addition, Latvia's first-choice PG Plavnieks has injured his ankle and even though he's expected in the rotation, their back court is nothing better than Hugary's. A win will see Hungary through and I believe they have a chance. They beat UK by 9, lost against Greece by 2, missing the lay-up in the last second and they were down by -5 against Greece with about 2 minutes to go. This goes to show they were on a par with all teams, which is not something that can be said for Latvia. Details

This bet is based on the match these teams played in April. They faced each other in the second round of qualifications in Greece. On the hot Kalamata court in front of 600 viewers, the Greek celebrated with 3-1 (25-15, 21-25, 29-27 and 25-21). So, small 12 points of difference, and that's where the margin is today. Today, Greece won't have the advantage of the home court, but the Swiss will. More importantly, the Greeks came weakened, without their four best players. Stranzali who won 26 points then is missing today. The Swiss could have won the third set then, but they gambled a huge advantage. Judging by that match, we'll see an evened out match today. The Greeks did defeat the Croatians yesterday, but that was Croatians' fault. Nothing like that should happen to the Swiss today because they know they can handle the Greeks based on their experience. They played even with them when Greece were complete, so they're much stronger today, and they have the home court. That's why there's no doubt that they can cover the handicap offered for them today, and not lose convincingly at home. Details

Bulgaria had a tough defeat against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the B Division of the European Championship yesterday, but that's part of why I decided to write this prediction. If Bulgarians resisted better to the objectively boring Bosnians, the margin would probably be over 30 points today... their opponents today are the Romanians, probably the worst team that ever played in the U20, at least lately. Just look at their results - they lost to Portugal by 27, to BiH by almost 60, to Lithuania by 20-ish, to Hungary by 41, to Israel by 32, to Britain by 30, and even to Norwegians whose basketball is almost nonexistent. But, the Romanians were nonexistent till last year, when they took the last place of the B Division of the EC, but they were a lot more serious then, and were losing matches with an acceptable points difference (to Britain by 2, Belgium by 10, Czech by 12, Portugal by 3). One of their worst defeats last year was against Bulgaria (54-74). Their problem is that all the main Romanian players from last year left (Ursu, Craciun...), and it shows on the results this year. Bulgaria have almost the same team as last year (Kostova, DImitrova, Hristova...), and it's clear that the quality difference between these two is much bigger now. Coach Tsankov said that nothing worked for them yesterday when they lost to BiH, and he also mentioned the referees. This is women's basketball, and the young Bulgarians obviously lost motivation after they got behind. But, the impression they left on this EC isn't bad. Israel, who were defeating Romania by 32, were defeated by 30 by the Bulgarians, the Bulgarians also defeated Norway by 20, Britain by 5, and the three defeats were in the thriller final moments (Lithuania by 3, Germany by 3, Portugal by 4). This B Division championship is played in Bulgaria, and that's where they defeated Greece three times, Greece who are among the weaker teams of the A Division. The Bulgarians were very convincing and defeated them by 30 twice. Details

Israel have so far put up good defensive performances but let's not forget that this is their fourth game in four days and that fatigue is slowly taking its toll, especially after exhausting games against Russia and France, so the intensity won't be so high. But the most important thing about this pick is that the game means absolutely nothing to either team. Bulgaria's games went over this margin against defensively minded Russians and Frenchmen and they didn't get a single point in last 2-3 minutes. They won't change their style, especially not in an exhibition match in which the Israelis can be expected to be a bit more relaxed. Details

Brazil have been playing their game for places 13th-16th just like they did in the group stages and they proved to be a classic under team. Very fierce defense is the foundation of their success, while their offense is much weaker. The Panamerican champions don't seem to have a classic shooter from outside so it's no wonder they're trying to play as patiently as they can so that they can get a few sitters. On the other hand, we have Portugal with an almost identical philosophy - a team with the best keeper of this tournament (Gois). Coupled with an already poor Brazilian offense, an under seem very plausible. However, there's yet another factor for an under - after successful saves, Portugal generally don't have a "killer" transition, while they have been pretty sterile against organized defenses after their first-choice pivot Fernandes got injured. This should be very important today against the 6-0 defense as Florencio don't have a replacement that could penetrated the compact Brazilian team. This is a match of huge rivals (partly due to historical reasons) and both teams will be motivated to win, which will not be possible without good defense. Details

Two teams with 1-2 ratio and an identical performance, winning against the Czech and defeated by Croatia and Turkey. However, Montenegro showed much more than Italy did in those matches, Italy fell without giving any real resistance. The Montenegrins showed their character, that they never give up. They evened out against the Turks after being 26 points behind, and against Croatians after -15. They couldn't turn over, but they showed they can and know how to play. They defeated the French, Germans, Russians... in the preliminary, after all, which can't be a coincidence. The main Italian player Fontecchia seems absent minded, he played all of the matches like he doesn't really feel like it, and he shows no desire or will. Besides him, the Italians have a humble team where Landi can be especially dangerous, with his great back shot. But, since Montenegro have Mikovic and Zizic, good shooting guards for those two positions, and at the same time have much better game than the Italians, it makes them favorites in my opinion, and I think we should cover that with a bet. However you feel about Verdasco, when he plays his best tennis, he's top 10 material, at least in my opinion. What I like is what he showed in the match against the consistent Busta. Perhaps it wasn't his best tennis this season, but he played the same level from the beginning to the end. He only offered one break ball, saved it and with two breaks, one per set, calmly ended the match. Hats off to Cuevas for defeating Chardy, but he wasn't impressive in the last two rounds where the lot gave him futures/challenger players. He had more difficult lot on some challengers. When I think of the Roland Garros match, I'm under the impression that it's good that it happened. When Verdasco plays, Cuevas is one level below. I knew that without that match, but that match only confirmed that. I'll always rather bet on the "unstable" player, but one who's a lot better, than bet against him hoping he performs badly in the semifinal of the tournament where he already has a few matches behind him. If this was the first round, it would be a different story. The Spaniard is better in every segment of the game, he had a "boring" opponent in the last round, passed with good grades, and he played the final here last year. The match is on his racket, it always will be and I think he'll easily win here. Details
