There are several factors that speak in Smyczek's favor. First of all, the ATP experience and the fact that Krajicek has only played two such matches so far and hasn't won a single one. The second factor are head-to-heads which clearly show that Krajicek has no answer for Smyczek's performance (3-0 without losing a set). All in all, I respect him passing the qualifications but I think he's not mature enough for this level and that he'll have to wait for his first ATP win. Details

Marathon opened up with an 8.5 margin, which is a colossal mistake but even this is a too high margin. The Spaniards play aggressive defense with a lot of contacts and on the verge of fouls, which definitely doesn't suit the Germans who have struggled against teams with aggressive defense during preparations (Serbia, Turkey, Poland). In individual terms and as a team, the Spaniards are better by at least two levels, especially as Germany are without their best player Zipser and Müller has joined the team right before the tournament.Their main games are those against Slovenia and Sweden and they will look for their chance there and once this goes over +10, they won't fight too much. Spain have mentioned how they're very motivated and pumped up but the fact that they covered this margin against all of their opponents in preparations except France shows how 'bloodthirsty' they really are. I can't shake two things away in this fixture - first of all, this French generation is talented and strong but it's a generation that barely did anything in Division A. They depend a lot on their Dallo-Jaiteh duo. The former is inconsistent, especially in terms of shot, while the latter struggles when faced up with equally good centers. He's prone to turnovers and when he's double-manned he doesn't have too many solutions. And if the Russians have something good in their team, it's their centers with Desjatnjikov, Kanjigin and their power forwards Iljnjicki and Doinikov. The second thing refers to Russia- they might have been unmotivated against decimated Montenegro so they lost by 2 points, but then they beat Turkey right in the middle of Istanbul. France had had some very good games against Israel, Croatia, weakened Turkey and even Russia, but even the Russian coach said they were not on their top level. I trust them today, motivation is often crucial for them and it should be there tonight. Details

These are the best two defenses on this tournament and they play a very physical game with lots of pressure an the very low margin of 105 points is definitely worth taking. France allow an average of only 44.5 points and Turkey allow 49.5. They have played twice during preparations. Turkey won in France by 57-51 while France won in Italy by 56-41. Last year at U-20 EC, they played a 70-point game although in slightly different conditions. This was an important game as both teams have a 2-1 score and a win would secure the next stage and a defeat would make things very difficult and they would have to decide things in the last round. Russia have a better offense than Turkey and France played a 55-51 match against them yesterday. Turkey went over this margin against Latvia and Czech Republic, but these are very offensively minded teams with porous defense. They won against Belgium by 48-42, Russia 53-47. France lost against Spain by 42-48, and beat Russia by 55-51. They played a 111-point game against fast Latvians and a 103-point game against Greece. Details

I watched Siniakova in the qualifiers yesterday and she can feel lucky to have reached the main draw. She lost a set against Bondarenko, allowed 16 break chances, lost his serve 9 times. Kolar had a one-break advantage on two occasions in the first set, three times in the second and had the serve to take the second set but she choked with her mistakes, although Siniakova didn't show too much either and she is facing a player that doesn't make mistakes like Kolar did. Siniakova is focused on her baseline performance and it often comes down to returning the ball and waiting for a mistake. That won't go well against Errani, all the more so as the Italian can hold the ball in play for as long as she wants, and she shows more aggressive on clay than before. The fact that she played Wimbledon finals just three days ago will not dissuade me from writing this pick. Errani reacted great just a few days after Wimbledon last season and the difference in quality here is huge, especially after Siniakova's match. Details

Bulgaria have had a good tournament in Turkey where they surprised everyone and got the second place. The Poles were there too but they weren't so brilliant. Even though the friendly games should be taken with a pinch of salt, the fact that they beat Bulgaria by +4 in Istanbul is certainly indicative. Both teams struggle in the paint and these problems are more apparent with Bulgaria. One could see that in Turkey (20 offensive rebounds for Poles) and Vutel and Galabov will have a hard time matching Witlinski and Borowski. What the Bulgarian coach complained about are their short point guards which Grzelinski should take advantage of. True, Bulgaria have Vezenkov but he's hard to stop as it is. The Poles will probably let him take his shots and stop the rest of the team. All in all, these odds underestimate the Poles and I expect things to be much tighter than the margin suggests. Details

What I've seen from Giannessi in the last two tournaments shows that the Italian's form is on the rise. He doesn't deserve his raking but it's caused by the result that is,generally speaking, far from his real capabilities. However, he has been very good in last two weeks and he seems good enough to handle Granollers here in San Benedetto. The Spaniard's has a negative score and hasn't shown much in last month or so - 4 tournaments and only 2 wins, and everything he lost, he lost after two sets. I think the Italian has much more potential and is in much better form. In addition, he has so far reached the quarterfinals of this tournament twice. Details

Even though Spain haven't lost a match at this EC, they have been far from impressive. They barely beat France, they beat Greece by 17 points and the Greeks are the weakest team here. They struggled against Latvia whom they beat by 6 points and then beat the Czechs by 12 points, but they struggled once again and beat their opponents in the final stages. And this Russia beat the Czechs with a lot less trouble. Russia should be motivated today as they lost against France and Turkey by a narrow margin and have 1-2 score, while the Spaniards have secured the quarterfinals. Last year, these two teams had almost identical squads and Spain won after a very tight game. In comparison to that game, Russia have improved their defense (new coach) and the Spaniards are still looking for their form from last year. Details

Italy are defending the title but that has nothing to with this as their last year's team has only 1 representative here. This is a weaker team with 1 good player that played for Lega Basket in Bologna for an average of 15 minutes, while the rest are players from the second division who got little playing time. Their coach is Sacripanti from Cantu and he will look for a good defense and will probably use zone defense to close down the paint as two tall Czechs -Slanina, Peterka- are their crucial players. The Czechs have a thin offense, they have a lot of turnovers, and are among the weakest teams here so I don't see them getting over 65 points against Italy's strong defense. Since Italy don't have a too great offense, I doubt they can hit 80 points. The Czechs played a tournaments against France, Greek and Spain, all very strong teams, and they have not conceded over 80 on a single occasion (62, 80, 76), none of their matches saw over 140 points so I expect something similar today. Croatia are without Šarić and this is not the same team as in previous years. Their attacks are organized differently, their tactics have changed and coach Milačić will demand organized attacks to find a position for Brzoja and then Mavro, Gabrić and Bošnjak. Their game in the paint is very poor and they will focus on flow of the ball and numerous blocks, which requires long attacks. They will focus on stopping the Turkish transition. Croatia have scored only 67, 67, 59 and 58 points in their last few prep games. Their offense is not too great and when you think that their main attacking outlet Mislav Brzoja hasn't played in two seasons, you see they could be in trouble. The Turks are without their main player, PG Kenan Sipahi, and even though they have a more potent offense than Croatia, I expect them to struggle against Croatian defense that could impose itself as Croatia don't have a good enough offense to win this through a high-scoring game. Lindell used to be a rising stay. He reached Top 300 at the age of 19 but he then suffered a major drop in form and had to fight his way back through the futures. He won two futures this season but both were in his home country and against weak opponents. He got a wild card for this tournament, which isn't always productive. Cervantes passed the qualifications and he beat Ghem in the last round. He could have been more convicning as he had 14 break chances but he only lost his serve once in three sets. The Brazilian is definitely a more difficult opponent than the Brazilian. The Spaniard is definitely playing better than his ranking shows. A month ago, he reached Furth finals, beat Rola and Martin, players who would eat Lindell alive. This year, he has won two ATP matches in Barcelona. In any case, he seems like a player who knows how to take his chance and that's what the Swedish player is. Details
