Porto - Bayern Munich (3:1)

Bayern with massive injury-struggles

  • Published:

Everyone's writing about Bayern's injuries for days now, but neither Porto, the only undefeated quarter-finalists, are complete - Lopetegui will try to crush the Germans without three players from the ideal starting eleven

Despite the nice memories Porto have of Bayern because they've reached their first out of seven international titles in 1987. against the Bavarians. They could have done better in the quarter-final roster of the Champions League. After pulverizing Basel, Porto entered the quarter-finals as the only undefeated team, and in 10 matches (they also played the qualifying round against Lille) they have seven wins and three draws with 24-5 goal-difference. Their ambitions grew which was seen in statements after Basel. At the time they didn't know who are they going to stumble upon in this phase of the competition, but their ambitions didn't go sour.

And while Pinto da Costa thinks his team is the strongest team in the last 30 years, at the same time coach Lopetegui says that the Bavarian team is one of the best Bayern's ever had:

- We're about to face one of the best teams in the history of the quarter-finals of one of the most important competitions. We want to play a big game and earn the advantage against one of the best teams in the history of this great club who are lead by an equally great coach. This will demand a great sacrifice from our players. We respect them, and we will have to do everything the best we can because they will force us to it.

Bask also added that they are a young team, that they've never played in the Champions League quarter-finals what he sees as an advantage, although he pointed out that his team will face an enormous challenge:

- I'm not thinking about absences because whoever plays will be equally competitive, especially when we look at Bayern for whom eight to nine world champions are playing. This is an enormous challenge, but we want to play an excellent match and earn the advantage.

The Porto - Bayern duel will be interesting out of numerous reasons, and one of them is the tactical approach to the game. Both clubs base their game on ball posession which is also a problem for the Portuguese. Such an approach against Bayern won't do any good and they proved to be more vulnerable when the opponents wait from the behind and then attack them with fast counter-attacks over the closed middle. Wolfsburg did that this year and they were awarded with the -1 win. It's on Lopetegui to decide whether they will stick to their principles or radically change the game which brings the risk of doubt among players before the game even starts.

Just like the Bavarians, Porto aren't omplete either. Tello's out for some time; before his injury he was in top shape. Jackson Martinez also injured himself. The Colombian still made it to the list of players available for this match, and only after a single practice. Instead of them Aboubakar and Quaresma will play. Quaresma seems to be in the shape of his life. Marcano will be out because of yellow card, and because of that the Dutch Martins Indi will take his place among the starting eleven.

Bayern practically secured the title in the Bundesliga, but that didn't stop them to play their best against Eintracht. Although Guardiola wasn't able to count on a couple of important players (Robben, Ribery, Schweinsteiger, Alaba), they reached a convincing win with no problems, with Lewandowski in charge.

Today it's going to be a lot harder to "hide" all those absence problems. With the above mentioned, Guardiola won't be able to count on Benati and the long-injured Javi Martinez. That's practically six potential first team players...

- We arrived to Portugal with the players we have and they will have to give it their best. In order to pass we won't need a single good game, but two - said coach Guardiola, and then turned to the hosts:

- I'm surprised with their quality. They have excellent individuals, their wing players are especially dangerous.

The aforementioned absences are the reason to change things. Pep will drop the game with three players in the back line, and return to the game with four players in order to additionally protect the wings. Dante and Boanteg will be the stoppers. Rafinifa and Bernat backs. In front of them will be two defensive midfielders Xabi Alonso and Lahm, and in the front what's left of the offensive players. Comeback Thiago will play an European match after an absence of more than a year, so the most is expected from the remaining three (Muller, Lewandowski, Goetze).

There's no doubt that Bayern are somewhat weaker with all the absences, it's only a question can Porto use that to their advantage. The Portuguese shouldn't take their problems for granted. We've already said that in such a situation they've pulverized Eintracht, and a round before that they won in Dortmund.
